++++++++

++++++++

LESSON OBJECTIVES

Goals

1. To give students an overview of 1 John 2. To help students understand that there is a way to live in response to the Gospel 3. To inspire students to live in obedience to Jesus born out of their love for Him

Topics

Believing, Love, Obedience, Serving

Scripture Memorization

1 John 5:1

OPENING PRAYER (5 to 10 minutes)

GROUP BUILDING (10 minutes)

How Well Do You Know Me? (Activity) Click here

GETTING STARTED (10 minutes)

General Discussion: • If someone followed you around for 3 years, do you think that person would find flaws in you? • What kind of flaws would your follower find? • Why don’t you think John found any flaws in Jesus?

As we enter into the last chapter of John’s letter, we are going to be confronted with truth from a disciple that personally knew Jesus. John is at the end of his life when he speaks to his dear children (the next generation of Christ-followers). The words that he speaks are simply to help clear up the message of Jesus, and what better person would know Jesus’ message than His best friend? (The one whom Jesus loved.)

DIGGING IN (15 minutes)

General Discussion: • If you were going to a foreign country to preach the Gospel, what elements would you make sure the people received?

There are actually stories of U.S. missionaries that have gone to Africa armed with food, clothing, Bibles, and money. Upon arriving in the foreign country, the missionaries were greeted by local pastors with a strange request. They said, “Please take all your material possessions and send them back to your homeland. Our people need Jesus and only Him, you can take back everything else.”

• What is the mark for every Christian no matter which country he or she lives in? Today’s lesson leads us into three essential areas that every Christian should possess: belief, love, and obedience. We are going to look at a section of 1 John today that has a lot to say about our current cultural climate. In this section, John is bringing his letter to a close. He reiterates the three important tests given throughout the letter and shows just how intricately they are connected to each other. The three tests that John has expounded have been the tests of belief, love, and obedience.

John Stott, a noted English Christian and leader of the evangelical movement, summarized these three arguments of John’s in this way, “We cannot believe in Jesus Christ without loving the Father and His children (1 John 5:1-2a); we cannot love the Father without obeying His commands and overcoming the world (1 John 5:2b-4a); and we cannot overcome the world without believing in Jesus Christ (1 John 5:4b-5).”

Read 1 John 5:1-5

Discussion Questions: 1. In these passages, what criteria does John give for being born of God? (Belief, love, and obedience.) 2. According to verse 1, a true Christian believes what? (That Jesus is born of God, and everyone who loves the Father loves His children as well.) 3. How can you know you believe, according to verse 2? (You love the children of God, love God, and carry out His commands.) 4. What are you supposed to love? (God and His Son.) 5. According to verse 3, how do you know if you love God? (You keep His commands.)

Another way of thinking about this is that God is King. His Kingdom is about love. If God (the King) says it, we should do it.

General Discussion: 1 What does belief in Jesus look like? (Loving, obedience, serving.) 2. What are elements of disbelief? (Rebellion, lack of love, selfishness.) 3. What is the hardest thing about believing in Jesus as the Christ? 4. How has your belief been shaped over the last month/year? The second aspect of following Jesus is in our love of others.

General Discussion: 1. What is the hardest thing about loving others? 2. To what degree is it possible for us to love others the way God does? If we claim to love God, it should be evident in our love for others. As Christians, our hearts are changed and we lay down our lives for others.

General Discussion: 1. What is the third aspect of following Jesus? (Obedience.) 2. What are some of the commands that we are given as Christians? 3. How does obedience display love and loyalty?

MAKING IT REAL (15 minutes)

Draw the following diagram on the whiteboard.

Discussion Questions: 1. What do you get if you have love and belief, but no obedience? (Love and belief without obedience is hypocrisy.) 2. What happens if you have obedience and belief, but no love? (Belief and obedience without love is just a bunch of religious noise. 1 Corinthians 13:1-3) 3. What about obedience and love, but no belief? (Love and obedience without belief is not a faith at all.) 4. Are these combinations even possible? 5. What is the result when all three are not an active part of your life? 6. Have you ever experienced this?

As 1 John 5 says, we really need to strive toward all three to live in response to the Gospel the way God intends us to.

CLOSING PRAYER (2 minutes)

Have the group make a large circle. Hold hands around the circle and begin praying. Since this chapter focuses on real faith, a good prayer focus would be to ask God to stretch our belief, love, and obedience.
