+++++++++++++

OPENING PRAYER (5 to 10 minutes)

GROUP BUILDING (10 minutes)

GETTING STARTED (10 minutes)

• What do you think “prayer” is?

• How often do you think a person ought to pray?

• How often do you pray?

• Can you think of someone whose life is filled with prayer?

• How is their life different?

• Do you think there is a relationship between how much—and in what way—a person prays and their closeness to Christ? What is it?

Remember—developing spiritual habits in our lives is all about building a relationship with God. Prayer is one of those habits. Can you imagine having a relationship with God and never talking to Him? Probably not the best way to grow closer to your Lord!

DIGGING IN (20 minutes)

Prayer is talked about several hundred times in the Bible. That alone should tell us that prayer is an important part of the Christian life and something we should know at least a little bit about.

Read Matthew 6:5-13

Discussion Questions:

1. What does Jesus say our attitude should be like when we pray? (Humble, not showing off.)

2. If God knows what we need before we ask, why do you think we pray?

3. If you could summarize the Lord’s Prayer (verses 9-13) into a couple statements, what would they be?

It seems to me like the goal of prayer is not simply to rattle off a bunch of requests—we want this, please do that, etc. God is not our servant. Instead, prayer is a way to connect with God. I think God tells us to pray (even though He knows what we’re going to say) because He loves us, plain and simple. He wants to have a relationship with us. Remember, that’s why we're learning about all these Spiritual Habits—to build our relationship with the Lord.

Read Acts 1:14 and Acts 2:42

Discussion Questions:

1. What was the priority of prayer in the early church, based on these two verses? (It was a high priority.)

2. How often did they devote themselves to prayer? (Continually, constantly.)

3. Acts 2:42 describes the lifestyle of early Christians. If you were to describe your lifestyle, or the lifestyle of our group, in one verse, would it sound like this?

4. What is the priority of prayer in your life?

Our next verse is short, but it packs a punch.

Read 1 Thessalonians 5:17

Discussion Questions:

1. How often does this verse say we should pray? (Without ceasing.)

2. How often do you prayer?

3. What would it mean to pray without ceasing?

More on that in just a second.

MAKING IT REAL (30 minutes)

Again, I don’t want to guilt trip you. That is a bad motivation for prayer. We all come at this subject from a different place. Some of us may already pray a lot. But we all have growing to do. So, how do you start having better conversations with God? I want to give you some ideas on how to start a habit of prayer in your own life.

PLACE & TIME:

We often read that Jesus got up early in the morning to pray. He did this not because we have to get up early, but because this was the time He had to Himself, which is important. (See Mark 1:35; 6:46)

If you want to develop a prayer habit, you need to decide upon a good time and place to pray. Maybe it’s first thing in the morning. Maybe it’s at the end of the day. Also, where you pray matters. If you try to pray while watching television, it might not work out so well. Do you need to get off by yourself? Go to your room? Spend time outside? Remember Matthew 6:6? Jesus tells us to be alone with God. Wherever you pray, try to find a place where you can really concentrate.

Optional Activity (5 minutes)

Have everyone in your group talk loudly with one another. They can say anything—their ABC’s, singing songs, or talking about their own stuff. Then, instruct two people to have a conversation in the middle of this setting. The point will be clear—it’s hard to talk and hard to hear when everything around you is stirring.

PRAYER EXCERCISES & IDEAS:

1. Postured Prayer

Sometimes our posture when we pray can really change the tone of our prayers. Are you grateful for something and praising God? Simply raise your hands above your head. You cheer and raise your arms when you’re excited at a game or concert, don’t you? It’s a natural way our bodies praise. Try it in prayer. Or maybe you are feeling down, and really need to receive something from God. Cup your hands and put them in your lap, as if you’re ready to receive a blessing or gift. Maybe you have sinned, and you just humbly need to repent. Getting on your knees, or laying face down on the ground is a very Biblical prayer posture. It may be a physical way of demonstrating our sorrow and submission to God.

2. Prayer List

Keep a prayer list on your computer, phone, or even on a piece of notebook paper. Maybe there’s a list of friends you are praying for. Post your list in your locker at school. Perhaps there’s a place you go to pray. Keep your list there.

3. Biblical Prayers

There are lots of prayers in the Bible. Most of the Psalms are prayers to God—of thanksgiving, help, etc. If you don’t know what to pray, go to the Scripture. You’re going to find some good prayers there, and they just might connect to where you are in life.

4. Pray Out Loud

It may sound silly, but praying out loud changes the way you feel when you pray. It can also help you concentrate, which is a good thing.

5. Prayer Walks

Go on a walk when you pray. Praying outside, in nature, or maybe while you listen to some worship music can help you connect with God on multiple levels.

How many of you have tried any of these things? How did they work?

Discussion Questions:

1. How might these exercises help you pray more effectively?

2. Which one do you think you’d be willing to try first?

LIVE A LIFE OF PRAYER

1 Thessalonians 5:17 instructs us to pray without ceasing. This doesn’t mean that in the morning when you wake up you say, “Dear God,” and the last thing you do before you close your eyes is say, “Amen.” Instead, it means that you live out an attitude of prayer.

All of us have knee-jerk reactions to stuff. If our parents get onto us, we often rebel. If a teacher is hard on us, we shut down. If a friend is mean to us, we feel hurt. What if your knee-jerk reaction—in every situation—was to pray? What if, instead of having a formal prayer for every situation, you were constantly holding a conversation with God in your heart?

Discussion Questions:

1. What would a lifestyle of prayer look like in your day-to-day?

2. How might you find your attitude changing if you adopted a lifestyle of prayer?

3. How is this suggestion different from the more formal prayer life that is often proposed for Christians?

Having a designated prayer time is a good thing—but it’s not what’s most important to God. What’s most important is that you know He is constantly available, and that you make yourself equally available to Him at all times.

CLOSING PRAYER (10 minutes)

What better way to end your time together than to give students a few minutes to practice their new habits. Give them more time than usual, and let them know when finished praying they can leave.
