++++++++++++++
+++++++++++++++
+++++++++++
1.
2.
3.
++++++++++++

Lesson 1: Faith, Love, and Encouragement
LESSON OBJECTIVES
Goals
1. To give students a basic understanding of the setting surrounding the believers in Thessalonica
2. To help students understand Paul’s reason for writing these letters
3. To remind students of the key themes of faith, love, and encouragement
Topics
Faith, Love, Endurance, Encouragement, Paul
Scripture Memorization
1 Thessalonians 1:2-3
OPENING PRAYER (5 to 10 minutes)
GROUP BUILDING (10 minutes)
This group building exercise is meant to excite students about being in the Scripture more than it is to introduce this week’s lesson in particular.
Three Questions about the Bible: Go around the room and have everyone respond to the following suggestions, even if they aren’t sure. This will mean everyone will share at least one thing with the class. This will prepare the group for discussion later. 1. What is your favorite book of the Bible? 2. Why is it your favorite? 3. Can you share a time when reading something in the Bible really encouraged or helped you? |
The Bible is filled with stuff that can sharpen our faith, strengthen our devotion to Christ, and teach us more about God. This 4 week study is designed to do that, too. Here, at the very beginning, I want to challenge you to be open to God’s leading through His Word. If you are, He’ll change you!
GETTING STARTED (10 minutes)
• What’s your favorite movie? (This should also be something every student can answer, gently force them to.)
• In 30 seconds, summarize your favorite movie. (Set a timer if you want to make it more fun, telling them they only get 30 seconds and when the timer goes off they have to be quiet, even if they’re in mid-sentence.)
• Why is it sometimes hard to summarize things that mean a lot to us, things, for example, that take longer than 30 seconds?
Today we’re going to try to summarize 1 & 2 Thessalonians. Only two short letters from Paul, but they pack a lot of meaning. Today we’ll discover who the Thessalonians were, how Paul knew them, and the basic message behind these New Testament books. Let’s dig in!
DIGGING IN (30 minutes)
We know exactly when Paul first stepped foot in Thessalonica. His experiences there are pretty important in terms of understanding the content of the letters. Acts 17:1-10 tells the story of Paul’s first getting to know the people of Thessalonica. (Have everyone turn to Acts 17.)
Read Acts 17:1-10.
Discussion Questions:
1. What two cities did Paul visit before arriving in Thessalonica? (Amphipolis & Apollonia)
2. How long does verse 2 say Paul spent “reasoning with them from the Scriptures"? (Three Sabbaths, or approximately three weeks.)
3. What did he tell the Thessalonians about Jesus (see verse 3)? (That He is Christ.)
4. According to verse 4, what was the response? (Some Jews were persuaded, along with many Greeks, and a few women.)
5. How did other Jews respond in verses 5-8? (Jealousy, formed a mob, drug some of them through the street, started an uproar.)
6. In verse 10 the Christians send Paul and Silas away for safety. Where do they go? (Berea.)
Paul, Silas, and others enter Thessalonica, and immediately start preaching in the Jewish synagogues. They see many Jewish and Greek converts, offend some in the city, and are snuck away to a different town. This is the last we know they visited Thessalonica. They certainly didn’t get to say goodbye the way they wanted. This may very well be one of the reasons Paul elects to write to them only a short time after they’d been together. (Have everyone now find 1 Thessalonians in their Bible.)
(1 & 2 Thessalonians were written in relative closeness to each other. Paul left Thessalonica for Berea. In Berea, he was agitated by the Thessalonians who followed him there to disrupt his work. This sent him to Athens, where apparently he got word from Timothy that they had some questions. It appears he writes to them from Athens. These are his earliest letters, written about 52-53 AD. The second letter follows closely after the first.)
Read 1 Thessalonians 1:1-3
Discussion Questions:
1. According to verse 1, who are Paul’s “co-authors"? (Timothy & Silas—NASB “Silvanus”)
2. What does the phrase “grace & peace to you” mean?
3. How often does Paul thank God for the Thessalonians (verse 2)? (“Always”)
4. What is it exactly that Paul remembers about them so fondly (see verse 3)? (“your work produced by faith, your labor prompted by love, and your endurance inspired by hope in our Lord Jesus Christ”)
In these three things we have a bit of an overview of this first (and, truly, second) letter(s). Paul writes with several key themes in mind, but they all revolve around faith, endurance, prayer, and love.
These are simple Christian beliefs, ones that we often forget. But we’ll get to that in a second.
Read 2 Thessalonians 1:1-4
Discussion Questions:
1. What are the similarities and differences of what Paul states here compared to what he said earlier? (Allow for discussion.)
2. Paul mentions that they are ever-prayerful of the bellievers in Thessalonica, again citing some reasons in verse 3. What are the reasons? (An enlarged faith, increasing love.)
3. What does Paul say the Thessalonians persevere/endure in verse 4? (Persecutions and afflictions.)
So both letters begin with encouragement. This is Paul’s reason for writing. The young church, just months old at this point, is struggling with their new-found faith, in need of encouragement, and in the midst of persecution. Paul reminds them that their faith, love, prayer, and endurance will see them through.
MAKING IT REAL (15 minutes)
It’s funny how the simple things seem to appear and re-appear in the Scriptures so much. We can dissect and define the Bible all we want, but it boils down to a simple message:
1. Have faith in Jesus Christ, the Lord
2. Endure hardships
3. Pray
4. Love one another
The Thessalonians understood these themes. We should too. These themes are reinforced elsewhere in Scripture.
Discussion Questions:
1. Read Micah 6:8 How does this relate to this simple Gospel?
2. Read 1 Corinthians 13:13. How does this fit in?
Having faith and hope in Jesus, loving each other and loving God—this is foundational stuff.
3. Read Matthew 22:35-39 How does this relate to what Paul says?
We all need simple reminders. Like the Thessalonians, we can be distracted by doubt, discouraged by opposition, and confused with questions. But these introductory verses are important for us to remember—have faith, love each other, and wait on Jesus.
These foundational truths form a bit of an outline for what we’ll dig deeper into in the upcoming three weeks:
• The Return of Christ (endurance),
• Living to Please God (faith/love), and
• Pray Continually (Prayer), key themes from both letters.
Workbook Activity (10 minutes)Challenge your students to think of some of the simplest things they can do to demonstrate Christ's love and show their faith in Him. Have them come up with their own ideas. However, here are a few examples just in case. (Spend five minutes each day in prayer, talk with a friend about the Lord, help neighbors with their yard, read a chapter of Scripture each day, spend some time at the end of each day in silence, befriend someone who seems “unlovable,” etc.) Have your students write down their ideas. There is a place provided in their workbooks, or you can simply furnish pencils and paper.
List some of the simplest things you can do that show Christ's love and demonstrate your faith in Him. It may be an act of kindness, the practicing of a spiritual discipline, or something else you feel the Holy Spirit nudging you to do. I can... 1. _________________________________________________________________ 2. _________________________________________________________________ 3. _________________________________________________________________ |
It may be hard to imagine, but Jesus believes that you can do the simple things you just wrote down. Pick one of the things you listed and commit to doing it this week. I’ll ask you next week if you did it, so be ready!
I want to challenge you one other way. As we dig into 1 & 2 Thessalonians, it’d be really cool to all read the books together. They’re short, and you can read both books by reading two chapters a day four days this week. Join me in reading through both letters by the time we meet next week. This will help a ton as we dig in. Sound good?
CLOSING PRAYER (2 minutes)
(Pray for your students that they will never forget the beautiful simplicity of following Jesus. Pray that they will take your challenge of reading 1 & 2 Thessalonians with you for next week. Pray that they’ll live out this simple Gospel with passion and endurance.)
