The Ministry of Jesus According to Mark

Lesson 7: Giving It All

LESSON OBJECTIVES

Goals

1. To expose students to the story of the Rich Young Ruler as it is told by Mark 2. To help students understand that discipleship is hard, but worth it 3. To challenge students to find their “one thing” and give it up in order to follow Jesus

Topics

Accountability, Choices, Discernment, Eternal Life, Following Jesus, Heaven, Perseverance, Self-Control

Scripture Memorization

Mark 10:31

OPENING PRAYER (5 to 10 minutes)

GROUP BUILDING (10 minutes)

Play “Gag a Napkin.” Hopefully no one will really gag. Invite several students to place an unfolded paper napkin on the tip of their tongues (it should stick). When you say go, see which person can get the whole napkin into his or her mouth without using anything but his or her tongue.

GETTING STARTED (10 minutes)

General Discussion: • What is the coolest gift you have ever received? • What is the most expensive gift you have ever received? • How does the cost of a gift change the gift? • Why are we willing to give up things that cost us very little, but hesitant to give up things that cost us alot?

Today we are going to talk about giving up everything to follow Jesus. Let’s get to it!

DIGGING IN (25 minutes)

Have everyone split up into different groups. It is not incredibly important how many people are in each group, but you should have four groups total. Assign a passage to each group.

Mark 10:17-21 Mark 10:22-27 Mark 10:28-31

Give each group some time to study their text. They should--when done--be able to tell you what happened in their verses. Once you have given them time to study, ask each group to give a summary. Then, move on to the questions below. Discussion Questions: 1. What question begins this passage? (Verse 17. What must I do to get eternal life?) 2. How does Jesus answer? (By listing the commandments.) 3. The man who asks the question claims to have kept all the commandments. Do you think this is true? Why/why not? 4. According to Jesus, what did the man lack? (He had too much stuff to follow Jesus truly.) 5. What was the man’s response in verse 22? (His face fell, he went away sad.) 6. According to Jesus, in verse 23, is it easy or hard for the rich to get into Heaven? (Hard) 7. In verse 24, what is the disciple’s reaction? (They are amazed at His words.) 8. What is easier than a rich man getting into Haven? (A camel going through the eye of a needle.) 9. In verse 26, the disciples ask who can be saved. How does Jesus answer? (That everything is possible with God.) 10. So, can rich people inherit eternal life? (Yes) 11. What does Peter declare in verse 28? (That they should abandon everything for Jesus.) 12. According to Jesus in verses 29-31, what will happen to those who sacrifice for Him? (They will be rewarded.)

MAKING IT REAL (15 minutes)

What we have here is a religious man who believes he has done what it takes to be a true “believer,” but has apparently heard Jesus’ teaching that conflicts with what he has grown up hearing. This is a guy who probably grew up his whole life going to church, and now that he is an adult, he heard Jesus say that the life that he has lived is not what being a disciple is about.

General Discussion: • Do any of you know people who think that being good “gains points” with God? • What is the difference between being good and following Jesus? • Do you think following Jesus is about “doing this/not doing that”? • If it wasn’t “do this/don’t do that,” what was the invitation Jesus sent to the man in this text? (“Follow Me.”)

It is easy to criticize the rich man. It is easy to name other people who get following Jesus all wrong. But, what about you? Most of us have one thing that hinders us from being the disciple that we need to be for Christ. General Discussion: • What would you say is the one thing that keeps you from truly following Jesus? • What is the excuse you use to try to justify your life? (ex. “I’m good,” “I try really hard,” etc.) • How can trusting Jesus be harder than trying to gain our salvation some other way?

Some of you who are here have not made up your mind that you are sure about being a disciple. Your issue may not be giving up money to follow God, but Jesus commanded us to give up EVERYTHING to follow him. I want you to seriously consider what things stand in the way of truly following God and allowing you to be a disciple.

If this were you in this story, what would Jesus say to you?

CLOSING PRAYER (5 to 10 minutes)

Separate into your groups and pray for what is happening in each person’s life. Have your prayer group pray for your “one thing.”
