++++++++++++

+++++++++++

GETTING STARTED (10 minutes)

General Discussion: • Have any of you ever been betrayed? • What happened? • How did it make you feel? • What did you do? Betrayal does not make you feel good, does it? However, no one understands this better than Jesus does. That is what we are going to discuss today.

DIGGING IN (30 minutes)

General Discussion: • When you think of a betrayer in the Bible, of whom do you think? (Most people think of Judas Iscariot.)

Today, we are going to compare two different betrayers. Judas certainly is the most famous of betrayers. Someone you might not think of as often is Peter. Read Mark 14:27-31 After seeing Peter’s remarks here, he sure does seem confident. Discussion Questions: 1. Do you know anyone who acts confident of something? 2. If you were reading this story for the first time, would you believe what Peters says is true or false? Why? 3. Why would Mark put this Old Testament passage in here for the readers in verse 27? (To encourage readers that Jesus gathered the disciples, forgave, and restored them.) Read Mark 14:66-72 The fact that Peter was there during this account says that he loved Jesus. This was obviously NOT the issue. However, his love did not stand the test of fear. After the first approach, he was fearful for his own safety. However, he could not totally abandon Jesus, so he just ducked into the archway.

The third denial was different from the first two. In the first two, Peter denied being identified with Jesus. The last time he denied Jesus himself. Think of how deceitful our hearts can be. This is Peter, the same guy that not very long ago was saying bold things like, “You are the Christ, the Son of the Living God!” and now “I don’t even know the man!” Luke records that at this point, when the rooster crows the second time, Jesus turned and looked directly at Peter.

Imagine yourself in Peter’s position. You are fearful for your life, and you are being accused of taking part in this man’s “evil” schemes. Then, once you have responded in fear, Jesus looks you right in the face. He is bruised, beaten, and undergoing that pain for you. You have betrayed Him. Can you imagine how that might feel? The Scripture tells us that Peter “broke down and wept.”

This is where the comparison comes in.

Discussion Questions: 1. What is the difference between Peter and Judas? (Judas hung himself; Peter wept bitterly.) 2. Did they both betray Jesus? (Yes) 3. So what was the difference? (Their reaction.)

Later, after the resurrection, Peter was the first to enter the empty tomb. John tells us that when he went into the empty tomb, “he saw and believed.” (John 20:8)

MAKING IT REAL (10 minutes)

By our words and our actions, we have all at one time or another betrayed Christ. The crucial difference between Judas and Peter was that Peter sought Christ’s forgiveness for his mistake. He took the opportunity of his failure and made it something great. Instead of dwelling on the bad, he took advantage of it and made something great of it. General Discussion: 1. What do you generally think of when you think of Peter? (His sermon on the day of Pentecost, 1 & 2 Peter, being crucified upside down.) 2. How do you generally think of Judas? (As a betrayer.)

These perceptions by us indicate what kind of response these men had. Peter repented and God redeemed the situation; Peter had many good days after this, his darkest of days.

Workbook Activity

Our Betrayal Through our own words, actions, or inaction we too will eventually betray Jesus. When this happens, it is critical to seek Christ's forgiveness and then use the failure to strengthen our walk with Him. 1. Be honest: when was a time you denied or betrayed Jesus? 2. Is it possible that you are denying Jesus in your life right now? How? 3. How does your response change your future relationship with Christ?

CLOSING PRAYER (2 minutes)

I am going to leave you to some solo prayer time today. Some of you may need to repent. Some may need to weep bitterly. Whatever your situation, I am here if you need to talk. (Dismiss students to pray.)
