BIBLE VERSE (5 minutes)
"Jesus immediately said to them, 'Take courage, It is I, don't be afraid.'" Matthew 14:27 NIV
Explain to the children that if they are ever afraid, they can look for Jesus. He promises to always be there during times of need, for those who believe in Him. Have the children repeat this short verse several times on their own.
BIBLE STORY (15 minutes)
Gather the children around you in preparation for story time. After the introduction, read the story about Jesus walking on water right from the Bible. If possible, use a Children's Bible so it will be easier for the kids to understand. Use different voices and give special emphasis during the dialogue to help make the story come alive for the children. For more tips on story telling: Click here
Introduction:
To introduce the Bible story today, first have all of the children sit on the floor in a large circle. If you have a large blue tarp or blanket, you may want to spread it on the floor and have the kids sit on it to represent sitting on water. Randomly ask each child one of the below questions, until everyone has a chance to respond one or more times. To help the children know when to share, you may want to use one of the ideas from Who Talks Next (Teaching Aid) Click here
1. What is something you are really afraid of?
2. What would you like to do if it was not so scary?
3. How do you act when you are afraid?
4. Who can help you get courage?
Our Bible story today is about a time when Jesus made His disciples get into a boat and set sail while He stayed behind to pray. It was early in the morning, and the boat was in the middle of the sea. The wind was picking up, and the waves were starting to hit the boat when the disciples saw something that made them afraid. Let's find out what happened.
Read Matthew 14:22-33 (Jesus Walks on Water)
Discussion Questions:
1. What did the disciples think Jesus was when they first saw Him walking on the water? (A ghost.)
2. What did Jesus say to the disciples? ("Take courage! It is I. Don't be afraid.")
3. Who started to walk on the water towards Jesus? (Peter.)
4. What did Peter see that made him afraid? (The wind, Peter must have seen the waves blown by the wind.)
5. Do you think Peter would have sank if he had kept both eyes only on Jesus?
6. When Peter started to sink, did Jesus grab him? (Yes.)
7. Do you believe Jesus will take hold of you when you need His help? .

For today's snack, use marshmallows. After thanking Jesus for taking away our fears and for his protection, explain how marshmallows are so soft and "smushable," kind of like we are. Just as a marshmallow can't stand under pressure, it is hard for us to have courage when we are afraid. But unlike the marshmallow, we have Jesus to help us when things get rough. Continue discussing how we can become "fearless" with help from Jesus.
