Daniel the Praying Man
A retelling of the story about Daniel when he was thrown into the lions' den for praying to God. (Daniel 6)
TOPICS:Daniel, Prayer, Protection DURATION:Approximately 10 minutesIn a faraway land there was a King named Darius who became Daniel's friend. Daniel was now a very important man in Babylon because he helped King Darius. There were also many other men in this story, but they were mean men. These men wanted to see Daniel gone, so they looked and looked for something that would show them that Daniel really wasn’t a good guy. |
Of course they couldn’t find anything, but instead of letting it go, they did what really mean men do—they made something up. They knew that Daniel prayed to God at least three times a day. So, they decided to make a new law that would make it illegal to pray to God. To do this, they needed King Darius to say that praying to God was against the law. They went to the King and convinced him to say what they needed. In this way, they tricked the King into signing a law that made it illegal to pray to God.
This law would be just for Daniel, and they knew it would work. They wrote a new law saying that any man caught praying to God would be thrown into the lions’ den. Wow, these mean men really didn’t like Daniel, so what do you think Daniel did? (Allow a time for them to guess) He continued to pray. Daniel would pray three times a day and he continued to do that. The men went to the same spot where they knew Daniel would be praying, and what did they see? They saw him praying to God, so they took him and brought him to the King.
Now remember that Daniel and King Darius were good friends. When King Darius realized that his friend Daniel had disobeyed the new law, he was very sad and tried to change the law. However, he already signed it, so it had to be done. Then the mean men took Daniel and threw him into the lions’ den.
The next morning, King Darius called into the lions’ den hoping that his friend was still alive and said, “Daniel, has your God saved you?”
To his surprise, Daniel spoke, “Yes King, my God saved me, He sent an angel to cover the lions' mouths. I am not hurt at all!”
The King was very happy to hear that Daniel was okay and that Daniel's God had saved him from such hungry lions.
The King decided all the people should know about what Daniel’s God had done for him. He said that they should also pray to the God who saved Daniel from the lions. And as for the mean men, King Darius took care of them. They were never seen again.
