Unbreakable or Breakable?

As followers of Jesus, we should never break our promises.by Kristy Thornton

TOPICS:

Dependability, Honesty, Promises

MATERIALS:

Several unbreakable objects  (Coins, metal spoons, keys, rocks, etc.)Several breakable objects  (Paper, raw eggs, sticks, crackers, etc.)

DURATION:

Approximately 10 minutes

WHAT YOU WILL DO:

Mix up all of the objects and place them on a table in the front of the classroom. Have the children come up, examine the objects, and separate them into two groups. One group should contain objects that are close to unbreakable, and the other group should contain objects that are easily breakable. You will then compare the unbreakable objects to people who always keep their promises and the breakable items to people who sometimes break their promises.

WHAT YOU WILL SAY:

Let's all gather around and look carefully at the items on top of the table. What I would like you to do is to put these items into two groups. One group should contain all of the items that are close to unbreakable, and the other group should contain all of the items that are easily breakable. (Hold up each item, and ask the kids which group it should go into.)

Good job! In one group, we have items that are hard, sturdy, and very difficult to break. (Demonstrate by trying to break some of the items without success.) In the other group are items that can break or tear easily. (Demonstrate by breaking or tearing some of the items.)

In the Bible, Jesus talks about two types of people–those who keep their promises and those who break their promises. People who mean what they say, say what they mean, and do not break their promises are like the objects in the unbreakable group. However, people who do not keep their word and break promises easily are like the objects in the breakable group.

If you were to be an object, would you want to be one from the unbreakable group, or from the breakable group? (Allow children to respond.)

Remember, if we tell someone that we will do something, we should do it. By doing so, we are being honest and dependable.
