BIBLE VERSE (5 minutes)

"Blessed are those who find wisdom, those who gain understanding." Proverbs 3:13 NIV

Read the verse several times to the class. Ask the children to fill in the word wisdom while you read the verse again. Read the verse one last time asking the children to fill in the word understanding. Lastly ask the children to name two things mentioned in our Bible verse today that make a man happy. (Wisdom and Understanding)

BIBLE STORY (15 minutes)

Gather the children around you in preparation for story time. After the introduction, read the story about Solomon right from the Bible. If possible, use a Children's Bible so it will be easier for the kids to understand.

Introduction:

King David ruled over Israel for forty years and then he died. God chose King David's son, Solomon, to be the new king. Although Solomon was young and inexperienced, he knew that he would need God's help to successfully lead God's people. Solomon went to Gibeon and offered the Lord a 1,000 burnt offerings. That night God appeared to Solomon and told him to ask for anything that he wanted. Let's read in our Bibles to see what Solomon requested.

2 Chronicles 1:7-12 (Solomon Asks for Wisdom)

Discussion Questions:

1. What did God offer Solomon? (God told Solomon to ask for whatever he wanted.)

2. What did Solomon ask for? (Wisdom and knowledge to lead God's people.)

3. What did God think about Solomon's request? (God was pleased with Solomon's request, because it wasn't a selfish request for himself, but rather a request to help God's people.)

4. Did God give Solomon what he asked for? (Yes, God gave Solomon wisdom and knowledge. God also gave Solomon more wealth, riches and honor than any other king in history.)

5. If God told you to ask for anything you wanted, what would you ask for?

PRAYER/SNACK (10 minutes)

Display both a healthy and unhealthy snack choice for the children. Inform the students that you will decide as a class, using the wisdom God has given us, to choose which snack will be the better choice. Display the unhealthy snack and list the reasons it would be an unhealthy choice. Next, display the healthy snack and describe why it would be the better choice for a snack. Persuade the kids to choose the healthy snack. As they enjoy the snack, explain why it pleases God when we make wise choices.
