MATERIALS:

Several kids (up to 6) or you and an older helper who would like to use the puppets in the skit.Card stockPaper Puppet cutouts [PDF] Click hereSkit handout [PDF] Click here

DURATION:

Approximately 15 minutes

PREPARATION:

Before class, print out the Paper Puppet cutout pages and cut out each item. Glue each paper puppet to a craft stick to function as a handle. Use a pencil to roll up the scroll. Before starting this skit, set up a stage with the backdrops that you would need, such as Daniel's room, the king's throne area, a lions' den, and the scroll for the new law. A simple puppet stage can be made using an old sheet, draped over a few chairs, with the seats of the chairs facing the puppeteers.

(Scene 1 starts with Daniel by himself on the stage, praying to his God.)

Narrator:

Once upon a time in a land far away there was a man named Daniel. He always prayed to his God, but little did he know that he was going to be tested.

Daniel:

God, here I am again. I want to thank you for blessing me today and for helping the King see that I can be trusted!

Narrator:

Daniel was finishing his prayer when three mean men came walking by and thinking of some way to find something bad about Daniel.

(Three mean men come onto the stage.)

Mean Man 1:

Look at Daniel, there is nothing bad about that man. No wonder the King thinks he is the best man to be in charge!

Mean Man 2:

Yes, but there has got to be something bad about him. Nobody is perfect. We just have to find one thing to make the King see that Daniel is not the best person for the job. Maybe even one of us could do Daniel’s job.

Narrator:

And that is exactly what they did. They kept thinking and watching to see if Daniel would do something bad, but they never found one bad thing. Then, they remembered hearing him praying, and decided to tell the King.

(Scene 2 begins with the king and his throne, the scroll, and the three mean men.)

Mean Man 1:

Oh King, we have a new law that we think you will really like.

Mean Man 3:

We just need you to sign this scroll so that we can start our job. We believe that any man who prays to God should be thrown into the lions’ den. You know, that means that if someone is praying to God, he is not praying to you, oh King!

(Mean man 3 pushes the scroll to the king.)

Narrator:

The King liked this idea very much and signed the scroll, but did not even think about his friend Daniel who prayed to his God three times a day.

(Scene 3 begins with Daniel by himself again, on the stage praying)

Daniel:

Oh God, the King has signed a new law and does not let me pray to you anymore, but I believe You will save me. God, I trust that You will help me as I continue to pray to You.

(The three mean men return to the stage.)

Mean Man 1:

Daniel, you are to come with us please, you have disobeyed the law that our King has made and you must be put to death.

Mean Man 2:

We heard you praying to your God, and so by the order of the king you will be thrown in the lions' den.

Narrator:

So Daniel went with them to see the King, all the while praying to God to hear his prayer and to somehow save him from the lions.

(Scene 4 begins with Daniel in front of the king and the three mean men.

King:

Oh no, Daniel, my friend, I forgot all about you praying to God! Now I have to let these men take you to the lions’ den. There is nothing I can do to help you now. May your God save you!

Mean Man 3:

Well, that sure did work! Now, he will be out of our way and we can take over his job and be as close to the King as he was.

Mean Man 1:

I am so excited! Let’s do this!

Narrator:

So Daniel was taken away to the den of lions to be thrown in, but little did the mean men know that Daniel’s God would be right there beside him.

(Scene 5 begins with Daniel in the den with three lions.)

Daniel:

Oh God, what have I done? I have prayed to you and now I am stuck in here with these lions. They look so hungry and so mean. Please God, save me. I trust that You will help me. Help me not be scared.

(Lions move around daniel.)

Narrator:

The King tried to sleep that night, but he couldn’t help but think of his friend who had really done nothing wrong. Now, he was probably eaten by those lions. The King hoped somehow Daniel’s God would save him.

As the king was thinking about these things, God did something wonderful. He sent one of his angels to go to the den and to close the lions’ mouths. All of the lions’ mouths were shut immediately and Daniel was not harmed. He even had a chance to sleep until the next morning when his friend the King came by.

(An angel comes onto the stage. Tape a black "X" over each lions mouth.)

King:

(From offstage) Daniel, has your God saved you?

Danniel:

Oh King, my God sent an angel to shut the lions’ mouths. I am not even hurt!

Narrator:

The king was full of joy, and so Daniel was taken out of the lions’ den. He was free to continue praying to his God. The King let his people know of what happened to Daniel and told them they should also pray to the God who saves people, even from the mouths of lions.
