MEMORY WORK (12 minutes)

"But the wisdom that comes from heaven is first of all pure; then peace-loving, considerate, submissive, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial and sincere. ” James 3:17 NIV

Write the verse on the board and after saying it once, erase one of the words that describes wisdom. For example, pure. After each time they say it, erase one more word until all that is left is the following:

“But the wisdom that comes from heaven is first of all ______; then ______, ______, ______, _______, and ______, ______, and ______.”

SCRIPTURE READING AND DISCUSSION (15 minutes)

Introduction:

Wisdom, as described in a Bible concordance, is the ability to recognize right from wrong. Wisdom is also associated with a very difficult word to live by that starts with an ‘H.’ Can you guess what that is? Let’s read James 3:13-18 to try to figure it out.

Read James 3:13-18

Discussion Questions:

1. What is that "H" word that is associated with wisdom? (Verse 13: Humility.)

2. Why is wisdom associated with humility? (Because you have to be humble in order to admit that God’s Word is right… and we might be wrong.)

3. How does James tell us we can know if someone is wise? (Verse 13: They are to show it by their good life and the humble things they do.)

4. James describes a different kind of wisdom- an earthly wisdom. What are signs of this earthly wisdom? (Verses 14,15: Being envious or jealous and having selfish ambitions.)

5. What are selfish ambitions? (When you do things and think only of yourself, rivalry, etc.)

6. James describes what wisdom from Heaven looks like, describe it. (Verse 17: Pure, peace-loving, considerate, submissive, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial and sincere.)

7. How can we get this wisdom? Hint: Look back to James 1:5 (We should ask God, believing that He will give us wisdom.)

APPLICATION (4 minutes)

Today we learned what wisdom is, how we can get it, and how to tell when someone is wise. Now that you know all of that, you need to decide to choose God’s wisdom in every situation, no matter how large or small you may think it is.

NEXT WEEK

Come back next week to learn what the word “submit” means and how we can “submit to God.”
