PLUGGED IN
A simple Object Talk to show that unless we are plugged in or connected to Jesus, we can do nothing.
TOPICS: Following Jesus, Fruitfulness, Power of God
MATERIALS: Small electric Lamp
DURATION: Approximately 10 minutes
WHAT YOU WILL DO: Before class, take the bulb out from the lamp. You will comment about your beautiful lamp and show the children how well it lights up the room. However, it will not work. You will then put in the light bulb and try again. Then you will eventually admit that it needs to be plugged into the electrical outlet to work. You will compare this to being connected to Jesus according to John 15:5.
WHAT YOU WILL SAY: I brought with me today this beautiful lamp from my home. I love this lamp. I use it all the time, even to read my Bible. I wanted to show all of you how well it lights up the room. Let me turn it on. (Turn or press the switch to pretend to turn on the lamp.) Hum, that is odd; it does not seem to work. I just used this lamp last night and it worked beautifully. (The kids may say it needs to be plugged in, but do not pay any attention to them yet.) Oh, I know what it is. I took the bulb out so it would not accidentally break on the way to church. (Screw in the light bulb and try again.) There we go... wait, what is wrong now? It still does not work. (Now when the children say it needs to be plugged in, admit that they are right.) You are absolutely correct. It does need to be plugged in. (If desired, you can plug in the lamp and turn it on.) Just as the lamp needs to be connected to the electrical outlet to glow brightly, we need to be connected to Jesus to bear good fruit. Jesus is our source for life, just as if the electrical outlet is the lamp's source for power. Jesus said, "If a man remains in me and I in him, he will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing." (John 15:5)
