THE LIGHT OF CHRISTMAS
The children will make a lighted craft to learn why Jesus came to earth. TOPICS: Christmas, Jesus, Salvation MATERIALS: Small jars with lids (such as mason jars or recycled jars) Battery-operated tealight candles Green, red, silver, and gold tissue paper Plastic baggies, glue sticks Tinsel
DURATION: Approximately 15 minutes PREPARATION: Cut the tissue paper into 3” squares and place each color inside a separate plastic baggy. Place a jar, tealight candle, and a glue stick at each child’s place. Consider creating your own craft as an example for the class.
WHAT YOU WILL DO: Explain to the class that Christmas is about celebrating Jesus’ birth, because He is the light of the world. Begin the craft by giving each child some tissue paper squares and showing the class how to place enough glue on the jars so the paper will stick. Encourage the children to cover the entire jar with tissue paper. Next, the children will place some tinsel in the bottom of the jars, turn on the tealights, and then set the tealights on top of the tinsel. Lastly, close the lids to illuminate the jars and admire the Christmas colors!
Application: Jesus is the light of the world because He was born to provide salvation for all mankind. This Christmas, let’s consider how we too can share the light, love, and good news of salvation with family members and friends.
