WORK IT OUT
The children will choose classroom jobs for specific “wages” to learn about grace. by Leah Pittsinger TOPICS: Sin, Salvation, Forgiveness, Grace, Restoration MATERIALS: Sticky notes Markers Various cleaning supplies Various prizes DURATION: Approximately 10 minutes
PREPARATION:
Write various classroom jobs on each sticky note. Suggestions include setting up the classroom chairs, placing Bibles on the tables, cleaning the board, dusting, sweeping, etc. Below each job, write a “wage” such as a sticker or candy. To make the activity especially interesting, come up with different wages for each job. Lastly, place the sticky notes on a wall or a dry erase board that the children can easily access. Also, place several markers nearby for the children to use.
WHAT YOU WILL DO:
As the children arrive, ask them to choose a job from the sticky notes. Each child will write his or her name on the chosen sticky note, perform the job, then remove the sticky note and give it to you to redeem the wage.
Application: You’re probably familiar with getting something good as a payment for a job well done. But what happens if we don’t do a good job? What happens when there’s nothing we can do to earn what we need? This is true for us because of sin – there is nothing we can do on our own to earn God’s forgiveness. However, God sent Jesus to die on the cross as the payment for our sins. When we believe in Jesus, God forgives our sins and gives us eternal life. So, even though we could never earn salvation, we are restored to God when we repent and accept Jesus into our hearts (this is called “grace”). If you would like to know more about believing in Jesus, let’s talk before the end of class.
