FREEDOM RACE
The children will race to throw water balloons to learn about gaining freedom from sin. by Leah Pittsinger
TOPICS: Sin, Freedom, Forgiveness, Salvation, God’s Restoration MATERIALS: Water balloons, 2 laundry baskets, 2 recreation cones
DURATION: Approximately 10-15 minutes PREPARATION: Make a water balloon for each child and a few extras. Divide the balloons equally between the two baskets. Then place the baskets at the starting line and the recreation cones at the end of the playing area.
WHAT YOU WILL DO: Go outside and divide the class into two teams and have each team stand next to a basket of water balloons. Explain to the children that the water balloons represent sin, so when it is each child’s turn, he or she will pick up a balloon, run to the team’s recreation cone, throw the balloon to break it on the ground (and be “free” from sin) and then run back to their team to tag the next player. Whichever team can empty their basket of “sin” first is the winning team!
Application: 1. How did we “free” ourselves from “sin” in this game? (By throwing the water balloons and breaking them on the ground.) 2. What does this teach us about sin? (That we can resist it and break free from its influence on our lives.) 3. How do we gain freedom from sin? (By believing in Jesus and receiving forgiveness for our sins.) The Bible tells us that we don’t have to stay bound by sin. In fact, God lovingly sent Jesus to die for our sins so we could be restored to Him. And, when we do, the Holy Spirit helps us find freedom by choosing to say “no” to sin. This doesn’t mean that we will be perfect, but it does mean God will be with us and show us how to overcome sin. If you’d like to know more about being free from sin, let’s talk together about what it means to become a Christian.
