WHOLE AGAIN
The children will learn that God can restore something that’s broken. by Leah Pittsinger
TOPICS: Sin, Forgiveness, Restoration MATERIALS: 2 or more clay pots Hammer, eye protection Glue (consider trying school glue or quick dry glue)
DURATION: Approximately 10 minutes PREPARATION: *Practice the activity at least one day ahead of time* Put on the eye protection and then gently tap a flowerpot with the hammer to break at least one large piece off the pot. Then glue the piece back onto the flowerpot. Before the object lesson, display an unbroken flowerpot, hammer, and the fixed/restored flowerpot on a table in front of the class.
WHAT YOU WILL SAY: Hold up the unbroken flowerpot and explain to the class that it represents our lives. Sometimes things happen that leave us feeling broken and maybe even a little angry with God (such as the loss of a pet or friend or the death of a loved one). Then gently break the flowerpot and show the class the pieces. Help the class understand that God cares about our brokenness even if it seems like no one else does. He wants to fix the broken pieces because He loves us more than anyone else ever could. Then hold up the glued flowerpot and announce that God can restore anything in our life that has been broken – He will fill us with His peace, love, and comfort. So, even when we don’t understand why brokenness happens, God is there to restore our hearts back to Him.
Application: Brokenness is in the world because of sin, but God restored us when He sent Jesus to die for our sins. When we believe in Jesus, we receive spiritual restoration from God. And, because God has already provided the way for us to be made right with Him again, we can trust that He can also restore our physical brokenness.
