Deep Roots

To withstand the droughts and hardships of life, and let others see Jesus alive in us, we need to be deeply rooted in the Word of God.

TOPICS:

Difficulties, Hardships, Stand Firm, Trials, Witnessing

MATERIALS:

Dandelion plant, flower, or seed stemDandelion pictures (optional) [PDF] photo 1  photo 2

DURATION:

Approximately 10 minutes

WHAT YOU WILL DO:

You will show the class a dandelion. If possible, bring a potted dandelion in full bloom or at least a clipping of a dandelion flower. If none are available you can use the pictures above.

You will explain how dandelions are able to resist drought and other adverse conditions by growing long roots and as Christians, we can do the same by being deeply rooted in the word of God. Then you will compare how the dandelion spreads its seeds to how we should spread the Good News of Jesus to others.

WHAT YOU WILL SAY:

Does everyone know what this is? Yes, it is a dandelion. The dandelion is a magnificent plant. You may think it is only a weed, but God designed the dandelion in a magnificent way. First, the dandelion is very hardy. It can withstand very dry weather, even drought conditions. It can also survive extreme heat. The dandelion does this by growing a very long root into the ground. Sometime the root can be as long as 20 inches. So although the soil is dry on top, the root reaches down deep to find enough water to live.

How can we, as Christians, withstand hardships and difficulties in our life? When things don’t go right, when we lose a loved one, get sick, or when we are faced with a difficult task, how can stand firm in our faith? The answer is by being deeply rooted in God's Word and in our walk with Him. The deeper we are rooted into God's Word, the better we can withstand what the world throws at us. Blessed are those who trust in the LORD and have made the LORD their hope and confidence. They are like trees planted along a riverbank, with roots that reach deep into the water. Such trees are not bothered by the heat or worried by long months of drought. Their leaves stay green, and they go right on producing delicious fruit. Jeremiah 17:7-8 NLT

The dandelion teaches us another thing about being a Christian by the way it spreads seeds. You have probably blown a dandelion full of seeds and watched all the little parachute-like seeds blow about in the breeze at some point. In the same way, as Christians we must spread the Good News of Jesus to others. The best way to do that of course is first to be deeply rooted into God's Word.

Discussion Questions:

1. As children, what are some difficulties you face where knowing the Word of God can help?

2. Besides reading the Bible, what are other ways to grow deeper spiritual roots?
