Too Strong For You

A story about a boy who finds that true strength comes from the Lord.

TOPICS:

Believing, Doubt, Strength, Witnessing, Worthiness, Works

DURATION:

Approximately 7 minutesAt birth, Jack weighed in at over ten pounds. When he started kindergarten he was already a head taller than the rest of the boys. He was solidly built and quite handsome. His blue eyes would sparkle when he spoke. Jack would use his strength to amaze his friends and make the girls giggle. By the time Jack was in the sixth grade his motto was, "Too strong for you."

Jack never really used his size to bully the other children, but let's just say he used his size to his advantage. When teams were being chosen, Jack was always the first one picked. He could hit a softball farther than anyone else and it generally took two or three other boys to tackle him when they played football. Jack's strength was quickly becoming legendary. Rumors had it that he could lift as much weight as two grown men.

There didn't seem to be anything that frightened Jack, bigger boys, dogs, even thunderstorms didn't faze him in the least. He would smile a big toothy grin and say, "Too strong for you," and continue on his way. But like the rest of us, Jack did have his fears. The worst of which was being in the dark. During the day Jack was the strongest and the bravest boy in the neighborhood, but you seldom saw him after dark. He kept this fear to himself and never told the other kids he was afraid of the dark.

Towards the end of the school year, to Jack's horror, all the sixth graders were invited to the traditional overnight campout. Each year four or five of the teachers would take the sixth grade class up to Cougar Mountain for a night of ghost stories, roasted hot dogs, and camping under the stars. Jack had hoped the teachers would forget about it this year. He had tried to make an excuse for why he couldn't go when one of the other boys said, "What's the matter, you afraid of the dark?"

That hit a nerve. Before Jack knew what was coming out of his mouth he said, "Of course I'm going, I wouldn't miss it for the world!"

The day of the camp out finally arrived. The sixth grade class loaded up the buses and drove to Cougar Mountain. They arrived an hour before sunset. Jack figured he could make it through the night as long as he stayed close to the fire where it was nice and bright, then once inside his tent he would sleep with his flashlight on.

One of the teachers asked Jack and another boy named James to go gather some firewood for the bonfire. At first Jack hesitated because it was going to get dark soon, but then decided that with his strength he could carry a lot of wood for a nice bright and long-lasting fire. As the boys left, the teacher warned them not to go too far.

The boys had gathered a lot of fire wood and it was quickly becoming dark, when they realized they were lost. They both yelled but heard no response. James said they should stay where they were, that the others would come looking for them soon.

Jack looked around and cried, "Did you hear that?"

James replied, "It is just an owl."

Jack whispered, "Did you see that, over there in the bushes, I think they moved!"

Again James replied, "It is probably just the wind."

By now it was dark and the others still hadn't found them. Jack couldn't contain his fear any longer, with a tear rolling down his face, he let out a whimper and said, "I'm scared."

James said soothingly, "Don't worry Jack. The others will be here soon, then we'll have the best bonfire ever!"

"Aren't you scared!?" Jack said trembling.

"No. I just remember Psalms 46:1, 'God is our refuge and strength, an ever present help in trouble.' I learned that in Sunday school this year. When I get scared I pray to God for protection, and the fear goes away, because I know nothing is stronger than God."

Just then they saw the beams of flashlights heading their way. The others had found them. Jack looked at James and asked, "Are you going to tell the others that I'm afraid of the dark?"

James patted Jack on the back and said with a smile, "No Jack, I treat others the way I want them to treat me. We learned that in Sunday school too. I won't say a word about it."

Relieved, Jack said, "Thanks, James. You know I would like to learn more about God and His strength. Could I go to Sunday school with you sometime?"

James replied, "You're welcome to come every Sunday if you want to."

Then together the boys yelled, "We're over here!"

James was right. After they were safely back at camp, they did have the best bonfire ever.
