KING DAVID

LESSON 5: The Dancing King

This lesson shows how King David displayed his joy and gratitude as he brought the Ark of God back to Jerusalem. His example teaches us that we should be unashamed in expressing praise to our Lord in everything we do.

MEMORY WORK (10 minutes)

"I will praise you, Lord my God, with all my heart; I will glorify your name forever." Psalm 86:12 NIV

Talk about the different ways we can praise the Lord. Some examples may be dancing, singing, playing music, bowing down, raising our hands, jumping up and down, and shouting. Have the children share which ways they like best. Then, divide the class into two teams. The challenge is for each team to outdo the other in saying the memory verse in a creative way using some of the examples given.

SCRIPTURE READING AND DISCUSSION (15 minutes)

Introduction:

Soon after David became King, he decided to capture a precious treasure and bring it back to the City of David, known also as Jerusalem. It was the Ark of God, also known as the Ark of the Covenant, and it was covered in gold. Inside were some treasures, such as the stones containing the Ten Commandments and some of the manna God's people ate while wandering in the desert. Bringing the ark of God back to the City of David made King David very happy. Let's read about what happened as David entered the city with the ark of God.

(Before reading the story, let the children know that an ephod is a sleeveless, pullover garment made of fine linen cloth. It was a common garment worn by priests while worshipping the Lord (See 1 Samuel 2:12, 27-28). You may also want to refer to the coloring page used earlier as an example.)

Read 2 Samuel 6:12-23 (David Dances Before the Lord)

Discussion Questions:

1. What did King David do after the people carried the Ark of God six steps? (He sacrificed a bull and a fattened calf.)

2. What did King David do with all his might as the Ark of God approached Jerusalem? (He danced before the Lord.)

3. How would you describe how David felt as he brought back the ark of God? (Full of joy and excitement.)

4. What was King David wearing? (An ephod.)

5. Why do you think David stripped down to wearing only an ephod? (Perhaps as an act of worship or to give him more freedom to move.)

6. What else could be heard as the ark of God arrived into the city? (Shouts and trumpets.)

7. When David's wife, Micah, saw him dancing in the street wearing very little, how did she react? (She despised him in her heart.)

8. In verse 21, how did David respond to his wife about his behavior? (He said he did it before the Lord and he will become even more humbled in his own eyes.)

9. David would not let the thoughts of others deprive him of showing joy before the Lord. How can we do the same in whatever we do? (Allow for answers.)

If you have time, this is an excellent story to read about dancing before the Lord. Even if you have already read this story sometime in the past, it would be helpful for your students to hear it again.

APPLICATION (5 minutes)

When the Ark of God finally returned to Jerusalem, King David was full of joy. He could not help dancing and celebrating before the Lord. Our praise and worship should be the same. We should not hold back our joy because of what others might think of us. In addition, we should not do what others do just to fit in. The only thing that matters, and what God cares about, is what is in our hearts. If someone feels like raising his or her hands in the air or clapping, that is fine. If someone doesn't feel like raising his or her hands or clapping, that is also fine. Our worship and praise should only be for the Lord, not for others to judge.

While watching King David dancing from the window, his wife Micah made a big mistake. She criticized and despised him. She believed that David's actions were foolish and unbecoming for a king. However, she was wrong. Why should a king not be able to express joy and happiness for God? Her bitterness ruined their marriage. Had she embraced the true meaning of worship and not judged her husband, perhaps they could have danced together before the Lord.

The main thing to take away from today's lesson is that people worship and praise the Lord in different ways. Don't look down on someone because he or she worships the Lord in a different way from you. If someone is truly worshiping from his or her heart, that is pleasing to God. It is also fine to dance before the Lord, so long as the dance is in good taste and glorifies God. This attitude should also carry over into the rest of your life, not only while worshiping at church. You should have the same joyful attitude no matter what you are doing, whether it is playing, studying at school, cleaning your room, helping your mom or dad with the dishes, or watching your younger brother or sister. Do it for the Lord!
