Coupon Book Think Sheet (Activity) Click here
As kids arrive, have them take a "Coupon Book Think Sheet" and pencil. Then, have them write down the different ways they could help their dads to have a relaxing Father’s Day. These could be yard chores, cleaning chores, or acts of kindness to surprise their dads. After students have come up with as long of a list as possible. Say, "Today, we want to talk about a celebration that helps us remember how we can please and make our dads feel really loved on this special day—Father’s Day. But first let us read some verses in the Bible to remind us of the attitudes and reaction we need to learn to obey our fathers."

SCRIPTURE READING AND DISCUSSION (15 minutes)
Introduction:
Anytime we read God’s Word, the Bible, we know that the story is true. Sometimes, Jesus uses special stories in the Bible to teach His followers a lesson. These stories are about things that could happen in everyday life, but they have a special meaning when we apply them to our understanding of God. God wants us to listen, read, and learn from these stories to become more like Him. When we listen to directions and follow God’s teaching, it's called obedience. We not only need to listen and read the Bible’s messages, but also we need to go and do what those messages tell us to do. Words are not enough; we have to use action to show our true hearts of obedience.Ask for one or more volunteers to read Proverbs 6:9-11, Proverbs 10:4-5, Matthew 21:28-30. Then, personally read the passages to the children one more time and ask them to think about the way each son responds to hisr father.
Discussion Questions:
1. With what does the father in Matthew 21:28-30 need help? (He needs help with work in his vineyard.)
2. What does the first son say when his father asks him to work? (He says he will not go.)
3. Does the first son change his mind? If so, how? (Yes, he decides to work the vineyard after all.)
4. What does the second son say when the father asks him to work? (He says, “Yes, sir!”)
5. What does the second son do even though he promised to help? (He sleeps and forgets what he is supposed to do.)
6. What could be a consequence for not obeying the father according to the verses in Proverbs? (A disgrace to the father, loses out on blessings, may become poor.)
7. When our parents ask us to do a project, give us an instruction, or ask for help, how should we respond? (We should respond with a willing heart and a good attitude.)
8. When you obey your father, it pleases him and makes him proud for having an obedient child. Who else is pleased with your obedience? (God, our Father in Heaven.)
9. What is Jesus trying to teach us in the parable of the two sons and the verses in Proverbs? (Our actions speak louder than our words. We should always try to have a good attitude and be willing to obey—we’ve got to go and do!)

Joe and Sons: A Modern Parable (Skit) Click here
APPLICATION (2 minutes)
The sons of the vineyard owner had different responses to their father’s request for help. One was willing but never followed through on his commitment to work. The other was unwilling in spirit but had a change of heart and completed the work. Jesus used this parable to teach a lesson—an earthly lesson with a heavenly meaning. The words we say do not matter if we do not follow through with our actions. We must go and do what we are taught through God's Word. Jesus wanted the people He taught with this story to know that actions matter and those actions show who we really are. Let’s work hard this week to make sure that we are obedient to our parents in both word and deed to honor God.
