THE APOSTLE PAUL LESSON 3: THROWN INTO PRISON

Paul continues to follow God's Will and share the Good News throughout the region. While many people turned their life towards Jesus, Paul still finds himself before angry mobs, and even winds up in prison. In this lesson, the children learn that even when thrown into a difficult situation they can still worship and praise the Lord. When they do, God will use them for His glory.

MEMORY WORK (10 minutes) "So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God." 1 Corinthians 10:31 NIV Read the verse together several times, then write the verse on the board. Say the verse together as a class, erase a word or two and say the verse again. Continue in this manner until the words are all erased.

SCRIPTURE READING AND DISCUSSION (15 minutes) Introduction: Wherever Paul went, eager people gathered around him to hear the good news about Jesus. However some of the people looked at this as a threat to their current way of life. Paul often found himself in danger, even close to death. In our story today, something very terrible happens to Paul and his friend Silas. Although ending up in a very depressing place, God still uses them in a mighty way.

Read Acts 16:16-34 Discussion Questions: 1. What made the owners of the slave girl angry? (She earned them money using a demon to predict the future, but Paul commanded the demon to come out of her.) 2. After the angry crowds joined together, what happened to Paul and Silas? (They were stripped, beaten, flogged and thrown into prison.) 3. What did the other prisoners hear Paul and Silas doing around midnight? (Praying and singing hymns to God.) 4. While Paul and Silas were praising God, what happened? (There was a violent earthquake.) 5. Why was the jailer ready to kill himself? (He thought Paul and Silas had escaped.) 6. What did the jailer ask Paul and Silas after he saw that they were still there? (What must I do to be saved?) 7. How was God able to use Paul and Silas in prison for something good? (Paul and Silas continued to worship and praise God, and as a result the jailer and his household were saved.) 8. How did Paul and Silas obey the command: "So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God"? (They used their time in prison to glorify God instead of trying to help themselves.)

APPLICATION (4 minutes) Often we find ourselves in a place we do not really want to be. We may be there by our own doing, or perhaps it is by mistake. However, God always helps us make the best out of a bad situation when we continue to glorify Him in everything we do.

The grace of God brings good out of bad. He used the Apostle Paul even while in prison. Because Paul continued to worship and praise God in prayer and song, the jailer and his entire household received eternal life in Christ. What a wonderful ending to a situation that started pretty bleak.

We need to remember that whether we eat or drink or whatever we do, do it all for the glory of God. (Have the class repeat the memory verse for today out loud at least one more time.)

NEXT WEEK Would you stay aboard a sinking ship, or jump into the lifeboat? Come back next week to find out what an angel tells Paul to do in order to save himself and many others aboard a ship sailing to Rome.
