玩“停与走”的游戏。这是一个很简单的游戏，但会帮助学生理解本课稍后要讲到的一个重点。如果你不知道怎样玩，可以按照以下说明进行：

使教会开始存在的核心事件，是耶稣从死里复活。若没有这件事，就仍然只会有一群害怕的门徒，躲在某个房间里。使徒行传第1章告诉我们教会诞生的故事，尤其让我们看见门徒蒙召要宣告的信息。
不过，在谈这件事以前，让我们先了解一些使徒行传的历史背景。
读 使徒行传 1:1-3
讨论问题：
使徒行传是写给谁的？（提阿非罗。）
作者是谁？（路加。）
这位作者以前写过书吗？如果写过，是哪一卷？（写过，是路加福音。）

Lesson 1: The Church Is Born

OPENING PRAYER (5 to 10 minutes)
GROUP BUILDING (10 minutes)
Play Stop & Go. It is an easy game, but one that will reinforce a point later in the lesson. If you don’t know how to play, here are the instructions:
• Designate a leader to start the game.
• The leader does something everyone in the group can mimic: jumping jacks, sit ups, hop on one foot, etc.
• Each time the leader starts a new action, he or she says, “Go.”
• Each time the leader stops that action, he or she says, “Stop.”
• The last person to stop when the leader says, “Stop” becomes the new leader, and it’s his or her job to do a repeatable motion or action for the group to copy.
• After a few rounds, ask the questions that follow in the "Getting Started" section.
GETTING STARTED (5 minutes)
General Discussion:
• This may seem like a very basic question, but was it hard to go when the leader said go? (No.)
• What helped you know what to do? (They leader provided an example of what to do.)
• Was it hard to stop when the leader said stop? (No.)
• What made it easier? (The leader also stopped.)
Today we are going to start a study of the book of Acts. The book of Acts is basically Jesus saying, “Go”: Go with the message, go with the Church, and go together. Just go! Nowhere in the book of Acts does He say stop. In fact, He hasn’t said, “Stop” yet.
DIGGING IN (25 minutes)
The central event that launched the Church into existence is the resurrection of Jesus from the dead. Without this, there would still be a bunch of scared disciples hiding in a room somewhere. The first chapter of the book of Acts tells us the story of the birth of the Church, and in particular, the message the disciples were called to declare.However, before we talk about that, let’s get some historical background on the book of Acts.
Read Acts 1:1-3
Discussion Questions:
1. To whom is the book of Acts addressed? (Theophilus.)
2. Who is the author? (Luke.)
3. Has this author written before? If so, what? (Yes, the Gospel of Luke)
4. What did Luke already write to Theophilus, according to this passage? (Luke had written about the ministry, death, resurrection, and ascension of Jesus.)
We do not know for sure if Theophilus was a specific person or a group of people. The name actually means “friend of God” and could either be the name of an individual or code for Christians at the time.
Luke is writing a sequel here. He has already written about Jesus' life up through His ascension. As we will see in Acts, he starts with the ascension and moves forward with the life of the Church. It is the message of the Church, post resurrection, which saturates the book of Acts. Two passages introduce this message early in the book and we will look at both.
Read Acts 1:4-11
Discussion Questions:
1. What did Jesus tell the disciples not to do in verse 4? (Leave Jerusalem.)
2. Who was going to come and help them? (The Holy Spirit.)
3. What were the disciples still concerned with in verse 6? (A political revolution; having the Kingdom of Israel freed from Rome.)
4. To what does Jesus redirect their focus? (The empowering of the Holy Spirit that they would receive and the mission to spread the message about Jesus around the world.)
Acts 1:8 serves as a thesis statement of sorts for the book of Acts. It is the moment in the book when the reader realizes where things are headed. Luke gives us the goal and then spends the rest of the book explaining how that goal was executed.
The Gospel is going to travel around the world, and people are going to hear about the Good News of Jesus.
Discussion Questions (continued):
5. What happened immediately after Jesus made this statement? (Jesus ascended into Heaven.)
6. How did the disciples respond? (They stared up into Heaven.)
7. Who appeared next to the disciples? (Two men, dressed in white—probably angels.)
8. What message was delivered in verse 11? (Quit staring up into the sky, you have work to do!)
The angels are helping the disciples get focused, as they are understandably distracted by the fascinating miracle they just saw. Jesus just disappeared into Heaven, but they had already forgotten what He said—that they were to be His witnesses all over the world. They could not do that standing still!
In the second chapter of Acts, we will see that the promises Jesus made in the first chapter came true.
Read Acts 2:1-4
Discussion Questions:
1. What happens in these verses? (The disciples receive the Holy Spirit.)
2. Where were they when this occurred? (Together, in one place, in Jerusalem.)
3. Had they obeyed Jesus? (Yes.)
4. What did the Spirit allow them to do? (Speak in different tongues or languages.)
The Day of Pentecost was a day when people from all over the world would come to Jerusalem to celebrate this Jewish festival. The different people groups attending would have spoken a number of languages. The Holy Spirit descending on the disciples was a noticeable event that allowed everyone to hear the disciples' message in their own language. The crowds were amazed, perplexed, and unsure about what was going on. So, Peter gets up and explains.
Read Acts 2:14-39
Discussion Questions:
1. What does Peter say in this passage? (Jesus is Lord, and you all need to accept Him as such.)
2. Who does Peter address repeatedly? (“Fellow Israelites” The Gospel was first preached to the Jewish nation. Later, we will see non-Jews reached, but in the beginning, the disciples preached the message to Israel proclaiming the Messiah had come.)
3. Acts 2:36 spells out who Jesus is. What does it say? (God has made Jesus both Lord and Messiah.)
4. How did the people respond? (With conviction, asking, “What shall we do?”)
5. How did Peter respond? (See Acts 2:38-39.)
6. According to Acts 2:39, for whom is the salvation message intended? (Those listening that day, their children, their grandchildren, and even those who are far off—anyone the Lord calls.)
In that verse, we see that the message is for everybody. As we go through Acts, we will see that this is true. Even some pretty despicable people turn to Jesus and are saved.
Peter continues to preach (see verses 40-41). Thousands of people are baptized. It is a great day. The Church has been born.
MAKING IT REAL (25 minutes)
Let's review before we try to figure out how this matters to us.
General Discussion:
• What happened just before Jesus ascended into Heaven? (He told the disciples to wait for the Holy Spirit and then go preach the Good News to the whole word.)
• Did they do this? (Yes.)
• Did Jesus ever say to stop sharing the Gospel? (No.)
• For whom is the Gospel intended? (Everyone.)
• Who is Jesus? (Lord and Messiah.)
Sure, the Church was born. Sure, Jesus is the Good News, but why does this matter today?
General Discussion:
• What did it mean back then that Jesus rose from the dead? (People didn’t have to be dead in their sin, there was hope for eternal life, etc.)
• What does it mean today that Jesus has risen from the dead? (The same thing!)
• What did it mean back then that Jesus was both Lord and Messiah? (He came to save His people, He was promised by the prophets, He is in charge of creation, He has the whole world in His hands, etc.)
• What does it mean today that Jesus is Lord and Messiah? (The same thing!)
• Is the message that the Church was called to preach in Acts 1 any different today than it was then? (No way. The way in which we preach it might have changed, but it’s the same message.)
• So, if there were people on the Day of Pentecost that needed to be saved, are there people today that still need to be saved? (Yes, of course.)
• Do you know anyone today who needs hope as the the people in Acts 2 needed hope? (We all need this hope!)One of the things I really want everyone to understand is that the message about Jesus has not changed. The other thing I want you to realize is that we are supposed to be preaching it.
General Discussion:
• Do any of you see yourself as a preacher? (If they are truthful, probably not.)
• Do you think Peter or any of the other disciples viewed themselves as such? (Not likely, as they were regular fisherman, etc.)
• What gave them boldness? (The power of the Holy Spirit.)
• What can give you boldness? (The power of the Holy Spirit.)
Remember our game at the beginning of class today? It is not hard to stop and go when you’re told, and yet someone always comes in last.
General Discussion:
• What are some challenges to “going out” to preach the Gospel? (Fear, lack of dependence upon the Holy Spirit, etc.)
• Do you think the first disciples experienced any of these same challenges? Do you think their challenges were easier or tougher to face? (Sure, they faced challenges, and they were first.)
• Do you know of any time in history—in Acts or other places—where Jesus changed the command issued in Acts 1:8? (No, the command is still to go and preach the Good News throughout the world.)
• We mentioned it is helpful to see other people going. Who has gone before you with the Gospel? (The disciples and thousands, perhaps millions, of others.)
• Is it an encouragement to realize that other folks faced challenges but stood strong and lived boldly, spreading the Gospel? (Yes, but it doesn’t make the challenges we face go away.)
• If you had to point to one thing that helped the disciples do what they did, what would it be? (The Holy Spirit.)
• How can we rely on the Holy Spirit? (Trust, faith, taking risks for God, prayer, allowing the Holy Spirit to convict us, acting on prompts we feel in our spirit, surrendering to Jesus as Lord in the first place.)
Think back to our game again. What if instead of only having a leader to look to and copy we had a leader controlling our movements and acting on our behalf. All we have to do is give Him control. That is what Spirit-filled living looks like, and it’s the way we can spread the message most boldly—going when God says go and not stopping until we get the command to "Stop."
We will learn more about the Holy Spirit in our next lesson. I want to close today by encouraging you to continue spreading the Gospel, regardless of the challenges you may encounter. God never said, “Stop,” He only said, “Go.” The disciples obeyed, will you?
CLOSING PRAYER (2 minutes)
Pray for your students to go and preach the Gospel with boldness, proclaiming the Good News of Jesus Christ just as the first disciples did.
