+++++++++++++++++++
+++++++++++++++++++

3. To inspire students to be ready for the final judgment
Topics
Return of Jesus, Preparedness, Stand Firm
Scripture Memorization
1 Thessalonians 3:13
OPENING PRAYER (5 to 10 minutes)
GROUP BUILDING (10 minutes)
Wall of Perseverance (Game) Click here
(One of the themes we talked about last week was endurance and perseverance. Paul mentioned a few times in his introduction to the letters that he prayed they could hang on in spite of persecution and trials. The Wall of Perseverance game is designed not only to wear the students out to get ready for further study, but also to demonstrate the difficulty of perseverance.)
GETTING STARTED (10 minutes)
Discussion Questions:
• How many of you were able to do your “simple thing” from last week?
• What did you do?
• What was the result of it?
• Those of you that didn’t do it, what stopped you? (I forgot, I was scared, etc.)
The overview we covered last week was really helpful in understanding the simple themes that permeate these letters. Now we’re going to dig into those themes a little deeper.
Today, we’re going to talk about the return of Christ. This is a much-debated issue. Often, we get into arguments about when/how/where Jesus will return. But in the Scriptures, especially in the Thessalonian letters, that’s not why Paul wrote about it.
Instead, he wrote that Jesus was returning to some spiritually weary Christians, people like you and me.
DIGGING IN (30 minutes)
Let’s start by reading another verse that serves as a great one to memorize. Turn to 1 Thessalonians 3:13. This verse also affirms what we just talked about—that Paul is talking about the return of Christ so that we can be built up and be ready for His return.
Read 1 Thessalonians 3:13
The goal of discussing the return of Christ is not to argue over the finer points of eschatology (that’s the study of the end times). The goal of every discussion about Jesus’ return, as far as Scripture is concerned, is to prepare us for it, whenever and however it comes.
With that in mind, we’re going to look at two lengthier passages, one in 1 Thessalonians and one in 2 Thessalonians. There will be some practical information in these verses, but remember that the main point is encouraging the Thessalonians—and us!
Read 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18
Discussion Questions:
1. According to verse 13, is it important to Paul that we understand the return of Christ? (“We do not want you to be ignorant”)
2. In verse 14, who does Paul say will be with Jesus when He returns? (Those who have fallen asleep in Him, or, those who have already died having accepted Him.)
3. How do verses 16-17 say the return of Christ will happen? (The Lord will come from Heaven with a loud command, and the dead in Christ will rise, then those who are still alive will join Jesus as well.)
It should be noted here that many believe the language in verses 16-17 proves that there will be a rapture, a meeting in the sky of all believers. Some debate this, pointing out that the idea of billions upon billions of people in the sky is not meant to be taken literally, but a figurative term describing that we will, in fact, be with Jesus. This, of course, is the most important fact in the verse, as Paul says at the end of verse 17, “we will be with the Lord forever.”
4. According to verse 18, why is Paul saying all this? What exactly is his point? (To encourage each other.)
Read 1 Thessalonians 4:19-5:11
Discussion Questions:
1. Paul gives two examples, or metaphors, about how Jesus’ return will happen. What are they? (Verses 2-3 say a thief in the night, labor pains.)
2. As a believer, should we be caught off guard by Christ’s coming? (No, we should be alert and self-controlled (verse 6). We should also be armed with faith, love and hope (verse 8).)
3. According to verse 9, what has God destined believers for? (Salvation through Jesus Christ our Lord.)
4. According to verse 11, what is the point of these words? (To encourage each other and build each other up.)
So, 1 Thessalonians is pretty clear—Jesus is coming back. When He does, those who have placed their faith in Him will be with Him forever. All this should be talked about by believers, not so they can argue the finer points of End Times Theology, but so that they can build each other up and encourage each other with the truth.
Now let’s turn to 2 Thessalonians.
Read 2 Thessalonians 1:4-12
Discussion Questions:
1. Concerning the Thessalonians, of what is Paul proud in verse 4? (Their perseverance and faith in spite of persecution and trials.)
2. Relief will come, according to verse 7, when? (When the Lord Jesus returns.)
3. How does verse 7 depict Christ’s coming? (He will be like a blazing fire with his powerful angels.)
It is noteworthy here that verse 7 does not say that “Christ comes down” from Heaven, but that He is “revealed” from Heaven. This is also the end times language Peter uses in his letters.
4. What will happen to evil men at this time? (Verse 8 says they will be punished and verse 9 says they will be “shut out” from God’s glory.)
The opposite is true among believers, who, verse 10 states, will “marvel” at Him.
Read 2 Thessalonians 2:1-12
Discussion Questions:
1. What does Paul ask of the Thessalonian believers early in this passage? (That they not be distracted by false prophecy or false prophets.)
2. Do you think that this must’ve been going on? (Yes, why else would Paul bring it up? There seems to be some false teaching going on.)
(Note: Verses 4-11 describes this person as a “man of lawlessness” and “lawless one.” This language is only used here in the Thessalonian letters. Some equate this with the anti-Christ talk of revelation. No need to go deep into this subject. Answer questions about it if you can, but don’t lose site of the point of Paul bringing it up, which is stated later in the text.)
3. Verse 8 tells us what will happen to the man of lawlessness. What is it? (The Lord Jesus will overthrow Him with the breath of His mouth.)
Verse 12 is interesting. It states simply that those who have not believed the truth will be condemned. This reminds us that it is our responsibility to turn others from lies to truth—from the darkness to light.
MAKING IT REAL (15 minutes)
With all these Scriptures in mind, there are a lot of “take aways” for us.
Discussion Questions:
1. What’s one thing you learned about the return of Christ you didn’t already know?
2. How can sharing these things encourage the Body of Christ?
3. Do you think Christians focus too much on the when/where/how parts of the end times?
4. If the point is encouragement and building each other up, how can we do that practically?
The bottom line for us is this: no matter how tired we get of living for Jesus, no matter how much opposition we face, no matter what happens around us, Jesus is coming back and we need to be ready, alert, and self-controlled.
A lot of times people think being surprised by the return of Christ means by the timing of it, but Paul really just wants us not to be caught off guard when Christ comes. In other words, Jesus should not be surprised by how we’re living (if He could be surprised), because we should be living for Him.
We need to exercise endurance, perseverance, and encouragement with everyone. It takes building, preparation, and self-control.
Further Discussion:
• How is awaiting the return of Christ like the wall sit we did earlier? (Students may surprise you with some great analogies here.)
• What can you do in your life right now that will help you be more ready for Christ’s return?
• If Christ returned right now, would you be ready or caught off guard? Explain.
I want to challenge you again this week in two ways. The first is to encourage someone with these words. Find a way to encourage another believer with the truth that Jesus is coming. Maybe you can pass a friend a note in the hall at school. Maybe a text message or e-mail can remind another believer to be self-controlled because Jesus is coming. Maybe you can pray for those around the world that are persecuted for their faith and ask God to encourage their hearts in Christ Jesus. Find a way to encourage someone else with this theme.
The other way I want to challenge you is by inviting you to read through 1 & 2 Thessalonians again this week. Next week we’ll be talking about “Living to Please God,” so keep an eye out for that idea as you read. It shouldn’t take you long, and it will help you absorb the lessons as we continue our series.
