Romans

Lesson 3: Action!

LESSON OBJECTIVES

Goals

1. To outline Romans 9-16 in a simple, understandable way

2. To challenge students to realize that theology without practice is useless

3. To inspire students to live lives of action

Topics

Behavior, Commitment, Endurance, Faith, Fruitfulness, Obedience, Works

Scripture Memorization

James 2:26 (While not from Romans, this verse summarizes today’s lesson perfectly: faith without works is dead.)

OPENING PRAYER (5 to 10 minutes)

GROUP BUILDING (5 minutes)

We’re going to play a game. It’s sort of like Red Light, Green Light with a twist. When I say, “Action,” you have to start moving. When I say, “Cut” you have to stop moving. I’m the director. When I say, “cut,” whoever is frozen in the funniest pose gets to be the new director. I am the judge of who wins. Ready? Let’s do it!

GETTING STARTED (5 minutes)

General Discussion:

• Do you like being active or relaxing?

• What about with your faith? Are you still and thinking/reading/praying, or are you busy helping people and doing stuff?

• Neither is bad, but every Christian should be doing some stuff, right?

DIGGING IN (25 minutes)

For eight chapters, Paul outlined some pretty deep theology. Now, as the book of Romans takes a slight turn, he begins to outline how that theology should be practiced.

It is impossible to cover all eight of these chapters in depth today; we want to look and see how we should take what we believe about God and put it into use concerning how we live for God.

In the middle of this section, there are a couple verses that are familiar to you.

Read Romans 12:1-2

Discussion Questions:

1. How do these verses relate to living for God? (We must give our lives totally to God.)

2. What do you think it means to “offer your bodies as living sacrifices?”

3. What would you say is the “pattern of this world” that Paul warns the Romans (and us) not to conform to?

4. How is it that we are transformed? (By the renewing of our minds.)

Now let’s look at some practical things that Paul says we should and shouldn’t do.

Read Romans 12:3-8

Discussion Questions:

1. What are some of the gifts listed in this passage? (Prophesying, serving, teaching, etc.)

2. How does God give these gifts? (By His grace.)

3. How should we exercise these gifts? (Cheerfully, diligently, etc.)

Read Romans 12:9-21

Discussion Questions:

1. What are some of the things Paul says to do? (Hate evil, cling to good, share, bless, etc.)

2. What are some of the things Paul says not to do? (Curse, be proud, take revenge, be overcome by evil, etc.)

Paul urges believers to do other things. Let’s discover what those are.

(Split your class into four small groups if possible. Have them read the following passages as a group and compile a list of things Paul asks the Romans to do. Then bring the groups back together to discuss what they found.)

Romans 13:1-14Romans 14:1-15:13Romans 15:14-33Romans 16:1-27

Discussion Questions:

1. What were some of Paul’s instructions in these passages? (Be submissive, love one another, not be a stumbling block, etc.)

2. How might those same objectives be lived out today?

3. Do you sense that these are suggestions or commands? Why?

MAKING IT REAL (20 minutes)

The bottom line is that the book of Romans is clear in its message, both theologically and practically. We have been shown great grace, rescued from ourselves, and given hope. But this does not allow us to “go on sinning so that grace may abound,” like Romans 6 says. Instead, it is so that we can live our lives with fresh purpose and action.

What is most important, however, is reading Romans in the right order. We should not think that doing the things God asks us to do is what saves us or makes us right with God.

Instead, God does the work of salvation so that we can live a life of active gratitude to Him.

(Attach a rope or string to an object. It can be almost anything—a hat, a book, a coaster, anything lying around. Ask a volunteer to help you illustrate this idea of ordering things correctly.)

I want you to take the rope and, using the rope, push this item across the room. You have to keep the item out in front of you and push—not pull—the object. Ready, go!

(This is going to be impossible to do. The slack in the rope will not allow the item to be pushed. Nevertheless, have the volunteer try anyway. A resourceful student might figure out a way to make something happen, but it will be exceedingly difficult.)

Okay, now I want you to take the rope and, using the rope, pull the item behind you, and move it across the room. Ready, go!

(If the rope is tied snug around the object, this will be a breeze. Thank the volunteer for his or her help. Perhaps have several volunteers try the difficult part of the task.)

You see, what is powering that process is the person. The object follows the power. In the same way, we need to order Romans correctly. The power of God is the Gospel (Romans 1:16), not what we do. It is only in light of the Gospel that we can do anything. The Gospel pulls us behind, moving us where God wants us to go. Pretending that our actions save us and make us right with God is like pushing this item around the room—it just doesn’t work.

General Discussion:

• Have you even gotten mixed up into thinking that your actions save you? How did you feel during that time in your life?

• Why do you think Paul goes out of his way to write Romans in this order? How should that effect how we view this book?

• When we behave out of gratitude, and not obligation, how is our attitude different? How might our behavior even be different?

CLOSING PRAYER (2 minutes)

Split up into the groups you were in a few minutes ago. Spend some time praying for each other. Pray that the Gospel will move you to act.
