~~~~~~
希腊语:
这里使用的希腊文单词与创世记6中所使用的希伯来文单词是相同的,具有相同的含义。因此,神对人类的看法:人是邪恶的,但神因祂的大爱而显出恩典,拯救了我们。
~~~~~~

Lesson 1: Rescued By Grace

LESSON OBJECTIVES

Goals

1. To equip students with a more complete understanding of rescuing (or saving) grace

2. To convince students that it is by grace alone that they are rescued (or saved)

3. To inspire students to live their lives with grace as the fuel for their behavior

Topics

Grace, Honor God, Justice, Love, Mercy, Salvation, Saved, Spiritual Gifts

Scripture Memorization

2 Timothy 1:9

OPENING PRAYER (5 to 10 minutes)

GROUP BUILDING (15 minutes)

Rescue Me! (Game)

GETTING STARTED (5 minutes)

• What comes to mind when you hear the word “grace"? (Forgiveness, mercy, Will & Grace, saying grace.)

• If you could define “grace” in your own words, what definition would you give it? Anyone?

“Grace” is a difficult word to understand. It’s used a lot of ways these days, and sometimes it’s used so often that some of the meaning gets lost in the shuffle. But it’s a deep, Biblical word (used over 200 times in the Scriptures), and it’s one we need to understand. Let's look a little deeper into some scriptures about grace.

Optional Activity (10 minutes)

Forgiveness Stories

Most of us have been hurt by someone in our past. Maybe it was a back-biting friend or a leader that disappointed you. Pair up with someone nearby and share a time when somebody hurt or upset you, without naming names. Just share your experience. Whatever happened at the time. In a moment, I will ask you some questions I’d like you to answer with your partner.

(Give students four or five minutes to swap stories)

Discussion Questions:

Now that you’ve shared experiences, here are a few questions to answer together. (Allow a minute or two after each question for the pairs to respond.)

• When the person you talked about wronged you, did you feel like forgiving that person? Why/why not?

• Have you totally forgiven this person? If not why not?

• If you have forgiven that person, what happened that brought you to the point of forgiveness?

• Even when you got to the point of forgiveness, was it something easily done, or did it take a real conscious effort?

DIGGING IN (25 minutes)

Everyone grab your Bible and turn to Genesis 6:1-8. As you read this passage, highlight or circle in your Bible every time you see the word “grace.”

Read Genesis 6:1-8

(Give the students a few minutes to read through the verses looking for the word "grace." Unless someone uses the KJV or the NKJV, they will not find it. However, if someone does read from the KJV or NKJV, that is fine. The connection of grace and favor will be easier to make)

Discussion Questions:

1. How many times in Genesis 6:1-8 is the word “grace” used? (0)

2. What word(s) sound a lot like grace? (Favor.)

3. What is the connection between “favor” and “grace”? How are they the same? (Allow for discussion.)

4. How does thinking of “grace” as “favor” broaden your definition of grace?Good.  Now let's read the passage again, together, and then dig into what the scriptures tell us about God's "grace" or "favor." Read Genesis 6:1-8 again.

5. Why did God decide to punish the earth? (They were wicked, etc.)

6. Why did God decide to rescue Noah? (According to these verses, we don’t get an explanation. Verse 9 gives us a hint, but let them struggle with the passage at hand.)

7. What is God’s response to unrepentant evil people today? (Hell, etc.)

Now, let’s look at a New Testament passage that echoes this text.

Read 1 Peter 3:18-20

Discussion Question:

1. After reading this passage, why does God choose to rescue anyone? (There may be a variety of answers, but verse 18 says that it is “to bring us back to [Him]”)

2. Does God have to rescue anyone? If not, then why does He? (Allow for discussion.)

Let's start our understanding of rescuing grace: Simply put, God has rescued us because He wants to.

Key Questions

In your workbooks for this lesson, you will find a box called Key Questions. As we continue, I will present three key questions, and I would like you to write down an answer for each, giving each question careful consideration. You can write down a single word, make a list, or a few short phrases.

(During the "Making it Real" time, the answers to these key questions will be used in a prayer writing exercise. If not using the workbook, the class can write down the questions and responses on a separate sheet of paper.)

Key Question #1

Why do you think God has rescued you? (Examples may be: "love," "He wanted to," "He thought I was worth it", etc.)

Read Ephesians 2:1-8

As we read through this passage, try to see if there are any parallels with who Paul writes to and what was going on in Noah’s day.

Discussion Questions:

1. What are some similarities you noticed? (Wickedness of man, love and mercy of God, God’s favor/grace.)

2. What kind of love does verse 4 say God has for us? (NASB: “Great love with which He loved us.”)

3. According to this passage, what saved us? (Hopefully, they’ll say grace. See verses 5 & 8.)

Lesson in Greek

The word used here is the same word used in Genesis 6 (Hebrew “hen” (rhymes with pain). The Greek  word “charis” (rhymes with yaris, the tiny Toyota car) has the same meaning. So God’s perspective of mankind has not changed. Man is wicked, but God  shows favor and saves us because of His great love.

4. Look again at verses 1-3. What are some of the things we are accused of?  (In the passage it says we were “dead,” “lived in lusts of the flesh,” and were “children of wrath.”)

Let’s add to our understanding of grace: God has rescued us because He wants to, and God has rescued us from ourselves

Key Question #2

From what specifically has God rescued you? (Examples may be a list of sins, situations, temptations, etc.)

Before reading our next passage, let me ask a few easy questions:

• What are you good at?

• What makes you good at that particular thing? (Practice, giftedness, etc.)

Okay, now let’s turn to Romans 12:3-8. There may be some stuff you don’t understand, but try to focus on what Paul says.

Read Romans 12:3-8

At the end of this passage, Paul lists some spiritual gifts: service, teaching, leadership, giving, etc. We don’t have time to go into all of these in detail, but we want to recognize the source of the gifts.

Discussion Questions:

1. According to this passage, who gives us spiritual gifts? (God.)

2. How does He do that? (Through grace. See verses 3 & 6.)

3. Did you ever think of grace as the very thing that makes you gifted? Why/why not?

Sometimes we think of God as a cosmic superman who has swept down and grabbed us from a tough spot. We are thankful, but we do little else. According to Romans, grace isn’t just something we are rescued by, it’s something we are rescued to. Grace doesn’t just save us, it empowers us to live. It gifts us, it strengthens us, it keeps us going. Without grace, we are not only "un-rescued," we are without purpose.

Let’s add one more thing to our understanding of grace: God has rescued us because He wants to, God has rescued us from ourselves, and God has rescued us so we can honor Him.

Key Questions #3

What has God rescued you to do? (Challenge them to dream big.)

MAKING IT REAL (10 minutes)

You should now have an answer to all three key questions. One is an answer to why God rescued you. The second is what God has rescued you from—it could be one thing or a list of things, depending upon what you wrote. The third is what you believe God has rescued you to do, or your purpose.

Read over your answers again. Then, take a few minutes and re-write what you have in paragraph form, as a personal prayer. (Allow a few minutes for everyone to finish.)

Now that you’ve all written those out, I’d like to lead us in a prayer. To begin with, I want everyone to kneel and bow his or her heads. You might even want to cover your heads in humility. I will start by reading some scripture, and as I do, lift my words up to God as your prayer. Remember that God has rescued you, and by grace you have been saved to a new life.

(As you read, have the students assume the positions described below.)

• Have students kneel as you read Psalm 38:1-8. At the end say, "But you have rescued me."

• Have students rise quietly to their feet and read Psalm 121. At the end say, "You have rescued me from trouble."

• Have students lift up their hands and read Ephesians 2:5-10. At the end say, "You have rescued me so that I might walk with you.”

CLOSING PRAYER (2 minutes)

Have students join hands where they are and ask if anyone would like to praise God out loud for rescuing them by grace. After several have prayed, close in prayer for your group.
