1 & 2 Thessalonians

Lesson 4: Pray Continually

LESSON OBJECTIVES

Goals

1. To give students a basic understanding of the Biblical doctrine of prayer

2. To help students realize what prayer can mean for their lives

3. To practice prayer in a more in-depth way through a prayer exercise

Topics

Prayer, Quiet Time, Intercession

Scripture Memorization

1 Thessalonians 5:17

OPENING PRAYER (5 to 10 minutes)

GROUP BUILDING (5 minutes)

Allow a few minutes for students to mingle and share how they were able to please God during the past week, in reference to the previous lesson. You will need extra time during "Making it Real," so only spend five minutes or so before moving on to "Getting Started."

GETTING STARTED (5 minutes)

Workbook Activity

Have students turn to their workbook to complete the following exercise. If you are not using the workbook, students can answer aloud or write their response on a slip of paper.

• Who do you spend the most time talking to each day?

• How much time do you think you spend talking to that person?

• How well do you feel like you know that person?

• How well do you think that person knows you?

• Why do you think communication helps us understand people?

Today we’re going to be talking about prayer—talking to God. A lot of people really have a gaping hole in their relationship with the Lord when it comes to prayer. Communicating with God is like talking with a friend—the more we do it, the closer we’ll be. 1 & 2 Thessalonians have a lot to say on the subject, so let’s check it out.

DIGGING IN (20 minutes)

We’re going to look at a few verses from 1 Thessalonians and a few from 2 Thessalonians. Some form of the word “pray” occurs 8 times in these two letters in the NIV.

(Assign someone to read each of the below verses. You may suggest each student read his or her verse more than once. Then, ask the reader to summarize the verse he or she just read. Most of the verses are straightforward, but summaries are listed below to help. Then move on to the discussion questions.)

Read the following verses:

1 Thessalonians 1:2  (Paul did it for the Thessalonians, it’s thanking God.)

1 Thessalonians 3:10  (It was a constant thing.)

1 Thessalonians 5:17  (We should do it all the time.)

1 Thessalonians 5:25  (We should pray for each other.)

2 Thessalonians 1:11-12  (Paul prayed constantly for their faith.)

2 Thessalonians 3:1  (Paul asked for prayers for his own boldness and deliverance from evil men.)

Discussion Questions:

1. Based on these verses alone, why do we pray? (We pray for each other.)

2. Based on these verses alone, how often should we pray? (All the time.)

3. Based on these verses alone, what do we pray for? (To thank God, for strengthening faith, safety, boldness.)

There are two main themes that emerge from 1 & 2 Thessalonians again and again—prayer means talking to God constantly about everything. We must pray for each other for strengthening faith, safety, boldness, etc.

PRAY ALL THE TIME!

If asked, we should be able to answer easily that we talk to God the most. Consider the words used in these verses to describe when Paul states the Thessalonians should pray: “always,” “night and day,” “continually,” and “constantly.”

Questions for Reflection:

1. Do these words describe how often you pray? (always, night and day, continually, and constantly)? Explain. Cite an example or two.

2. How much time each day do you spend talking to God, honestly?

3. How could you change those habits and still have time for school, meals, and sleep? Is it possible to pray as Paul describes and not flunk your classes?

PRAY FOR OTHERS!

The second obvious theme in these verses is the idea of praying for others. Paul makes it clear that he prays for the Thessalonians, and he recruits them to pray for him.

Questions for Reflection:

1. Do any of these verses mention praying for yourself? (While it is perfectly acceptable to pray for our own needs, it’s noteworthy to mention that we should not focus only on ourselves, but also be actively be praying for the needs of others.)

2. If you’re honest, how much time do you spend praying about your own needs/wants?

3. Why do you think it would be better not to pray for yourself but instead to focus on the needs of others?

In a perfect world, we would never need to pray for ourselves because we would know others are praying for us. In fact, there are people who pray for you. If your parents or other family members don’t, there are people at church who do. I do! (Make sure that’s true before you say it to the students.)

These aren’t the only verses in the Bible on prayer. The topic is discussed almost 400 times overall and is in almost every book of the Bible. But these verses make sense in the context of Paul's letters—Paul cares about these people. They have a good relationship, and they pray constantly for one another.

We don’t have time to cover many of the other verses, but here are a some: (If time permits you can read each verse, or simply offer the summary provided)

• Psalm 65:2 (God hears prayer.)

• Proverbs 15:8 (Our prayers please God.)

• Matthew 5:44 (We should pray for our enemies.)

• Matthew 6:5-7 (Prayer is private.)

• Mark 1:35 (Jesus prayed…a lot.)

• Acts 4:31 (We should pray with other Christians: it’s powerful.)

Rather than talking about prayer more, let's practice it.

MAKING IT REAL (20 minutes)

(Below is a prayer exercise that will take 15-20 minutes. Encourage students to participate.)

Prayer Exercise

I'm going to ask each of you to find a place in the room where you will not be distracted. This is just going to be a conversation between you and God. You’ll need your Bible, and you may want a piece of paper and pen. (There is also a place to write in the student workbook.)

The directions are simple. Occasionally I’m going to say something out loud that I want you to put into practice, then we’ll have plenty of time in between to pray. Make sense? Go ahead and spread out.

(Give the students a few seconds to get organized.)

• If prayer is a conversation, then it needs to go both ways. Before you say a word, take 2 minutes and listen for God’s voice. Be totally silent. You may not “hear” anything, but try to clear your mind. Don’t say anything to God—just be still.

(Give the students a few seconds to get still.)

• God deserves our praise. Either write down or speak to God in your heart all the ways you are thankful to Him—for who He is and what He has done. Don’t focus on yourself, but on who God is and what He has done.

(Give them 3 minutes to do this)

• In the Bible, some people ask Jesus to teach them how to pray. His response is recorded in Matthew 6:9-13. In the next few moments I want you to read that passage several times. First, just read it. But as you repeat the reading of it, may it serve as a sincere prayer between you and the Lord.

(Give students 5 minutes to do this)

• We should pray to avoid evil and that our daily needs be met. However, notice that even here the word used is not “me” but “us,” not “I” but “we.” Prayer is not about the desires of an individual. Let’s take some time to pray for others. There are probably people you know who have really unique needs. Pray for them. Pray for the other people in this room—for strengthened faith and boldness. Pray for Christians all over the world, believers you don’t even know.

(Give students about 5 minutes to do this)

• Go back to 1 Thessalonians 5:17. I want you to read that verse several times. Let it get under your skin. To pray without ceasing is a high calling. As you read, listen for God’s Holy Spirit to instruct you.

(Give students a few minutes to do this, then close in prayer.)

CLOSING PRAYER (2 minutes)

Pray that your students can begin to live a life of prayer
