DURATION:

Approximately 10 minutesDaniel lived with his family on a farm, full of animals. They had pigs, chickens, goats, sheep, cows, and some ducks. Daniel also had his very own lovable dog named Beetle. His name was Beetle because he was kind of fat, and when he walked, he looked a little like a beetle bug.

Daniel’s job on the farm was to feed the chickens and collect the eggs, feed and brush his dog, and of course, put away all of his toys. That was about all a six-year-old-boy could do, even on a farm. However, he didn’t mind the chores, especially because he got 50 cents every day for doing all of them. You can imagine, if Daniel did his chores every day, he could earn quite a lot of money. His mom always gave him what he earned that week on Sunday morning, so Daniel would know what it was like to work hard for money.

Daniel also went to church with his mommy every Sunday. He always made sure to give back to Jesus some of the money he earned that week. He knew in his heart that being obedient to God in this way was showing how much He loved Jesus.

One morning, Daniel and his mom visited a neighboring farm to look at some animals for sale. The little boy spotted a little puppy that looked a little like Beetle. A big sign just above his box read, “For Sale $25.”

“Mommy, I want to buy that puppy. Can I?” Daniel pleaded. “I have almost enough money in my bank.”

“Well, yes you almost have enough, but I think you need a few more dollars,” his mom replied.

“How long will it take me to earn what I need?” he asked as he began counting in the air with his fingers.

“If you do all of your chores every day, you will have just enough this Sunday. After church, we can go and pick up the puppy.”

“Oh, I can’t wait. Then Beetle will have a new friend.”

So, the two went back home, and every day that week Daniel did his chores. He didn’t always feel like putting away his toys, but all his mother had to do was gently remind him about the puppy, and he would obey.

Finally, Sunday came and Daniel’s mom handed him what he earned for the week.

Daniel quickly counted his money. “Look, I have $25 exactly. After church we can go and pick up the puppy! Then Beetle can meet his new friend!”

“Wait Daniel,” his mom said with concern as she looked at the pile of coins. “Are you forgetting something?”

Daniel thought for a moment. “Oh yeah, I almost forgot. First I must give to the Lord.” He looked at the pile of coins with disappointment. “Can I skip this time, mom?”

“Is that what you really want to do? Son, what is more important to you, Jesus or the puppy?”

Daniel sat with his head down, thinking, “Jesus is more important of course. I know I should obey God first.”

That Sunday, Daniel gave some of his money to the church as always, knowing it would take another week now to earn enough to buy the puppy. He was worried that someone else may have already bought the puppy that looked like Beetle, but he hoped no one had.

At last, a week later he had enough money and went with his mom back to the neighboring farm. You wouldn’t believe the disappointment when Daniel saw the empty box where the puppy used to be. He began sobbing, as his mother took him and gave him a comforting hug.

Just then, the farmer came out and asked why Daniel was crying so hard. His mommy explained everything that happened.

“Oh, young man,” he said in a soft voice. “I have plenty more puppies for sale. They are only about seven weeks old so I keep them in the house. Would you like to see them?”

“Yes, sure!” Daniel said with a big smile.

They all went into the house and sure enough, there were four more puppies, and they all looked just like Beetle.

“I really like this one,” Daniel said. “How much is he?”

The farmer looked up for a moment, and then replied, “For you, only ten dollars!"

Daniel counted out ten dollars and gave it to the farmer for the little puppy. Then he and his mom hurried home. Yes indeed, Beetle now had a wonderful new friend, and so did Daniel.
