LESSON 2: The Fiery Furnace

Practice this verse with the children. Explain that God's law is always more important than the laws of men.
BIBLE STORY (15 minutes)
Gather the children around you in preparation for story time. After the introduction, read the story about -- right from the Bible. If possible, use a Children's Bible so it will be easier for the kids to understand.
Introduction:
Once again, the king is testing our three young friends. This time the king wants Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego to bow down to a large golden statue that he made, but this would be idol worship - which God clearly forbids. Will our three friends listen to the king or God? Let's read our story to find out.
Read Daniel 3 (The Image of Gold & The Fiery Furnace)
Discussion Questions:
1. What did King Nebuchadnezzar make out of gold? How big was it? (The king made a golden image or statue that was 90 feet tall and nine feet wide.)
2. What did the king command the people to do when they heard the music? (Bow down and worship the golden image.)
3. Why didn't Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego do what the king commanded? (These young men put God's commands before the king's and knew it was wrong to worship an idol. These young men would only worship God.)
4.The king became very angry. What did the king do with Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego? (He ordered that the furnace be heated up seven times hotter than normal, commanded some of the strongest men in his army to tie the young men up, and then throw them into the blazing furnace!)
5. The king had three young men thrown into the fire, how many people did he see walking around in the fire? (The king saw four people walking around in the fire.)
6. When Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego came out of the fire, were their bodies burned or did their clothes smell like smoke? (No, God had sent an angel to protect Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego from the effects of the fire.)
7. What did the king do when he saw that God had rescued the young men? (The king praised God.)
