BIBLE VERSE (7 minutes)

“And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus.” Colossians 3:17a NIV

Write the verse in big letters on a poster board. Then cut the poster into 12-20 jigsaw pieces to make a class puzzle. Read the verse and show the children where it is found in the Bible. Next, ask the children to work with you to put the puzzle back together. Read the verse again and emphasize that no matter what we do, we should do it for Jesus!

BIBLE STORY (15 minutes)

Introduction:

We’ve learned that the Bible teaches us that what we say and what we do should show others that we believe in Jesus. But what about the times when we don’t feel like being nice or showing love? Why does the Bible tell us to follow Jesus’ example anyway? Today’s lesson will show us that following Jesus sometimes means giving up what we want so that others can have the chance to believe in Him too.

Read Colossians 3:12-17 (Following Jesus’ good example.)Discussion Questions:

1. Why should we be kind, gentle, and patient? (Because we are loved by God and become His chosen people when we believe in Him.)

2. Why do we forgive one another? (Because God forgives us!)

3. What binds, or holds, everything together? (Love.)

4. What will be in our hearts if we trust in Jesus? (Peace and thankfulness.)

5. What are some ways we can share Jesus’ love? (Through songs, helping others, etc.)

6. What should we do in the “name of the Lord?” (Everything!)

7. Why do we follow Jesus’ example? (Because we are thankful.)

8. Can we keep learning about Jesus even if we don’t want to follow His example? Why or why not? (No, because the Bible tells us that our actions will be like Jesus’ actions if we believe in Him.)

Conclusion:

We follow Jesus’ example because He loves us and died for us. And when we choose to obey God, even when it is hard, and we don’t feel like obeying Him, we will grow to know more about Him. Sometimes all it takes when we don’t feel like obeying God is remembering everything He has already done!

PRAYER/SNACK (10 minutes)

Further info? Click here

Lead the children in prayer and then pass out a healthy snack. While eating, describe someone who has been a good example for you by using descriptive words the children can understand (e.g. honest, kind, loving, etc.). Next, point out someone the children know who is a good example, such as a pastor, teacher, friend, or family member and list similar reasons. Then invite the children to talk about other people who set good examples. Lastly, remind the class that Jesus is the best example of all because He loved us so much that He died for our sins. Talk about what it means to believe in Jesus and why His death and resurrection were necessary, so we could have a relationship with Him and go to Heaven one day. Allow some time for the children to ask questions about believing in Jesus.

CLOSING ACTIVITY (5-10 minutes)

Ask the children to come up with different ways we show our love for one another (by sharing, being kind, speaking nice words, being a helper, telling the truth, etc.). Then pick one example and say, “I like to show love by [insert example].” Then give each child an opportunity to state their favorite way to show love to others and encourage them to practice showing love this week to their family and friends.

NEXT WEEK

Come back next week for another Colossians lesson!
