SCRIPTURE READING AND DISCUSSION (15 minutes)

Introduction:It’s time for our Bible story for today. Today we are going to continue talking about some of the people that were part of the Christmas story. The Christmas story is all about the birth of Jesus Christ and it is one of the most important stories in the Bible! When we read from the Gospel of Matthew he tells us details about some Religious Leaders and how they were part of the story of Jesus’ birth. King Herod of Jerusalem wanted to know where Jesus, the Messiah, was born so he called for these leaders. The Religious Leaders studied scripture daily and knew exactly where God’s Word said that the Messiah would be born. Let’s listen to the story unfold.

Read Matthew 2:1-8.  Ask the students to listen to details about the religious leaders and what they said to Herod.

Discussion Questions:

1. What upset King Herod about the arrival of the Magi? (They claimed that a new star appeared in honor of the king of the Jews that was just born.)

2. Who else was disturbed by the news of this “king” being born? (All of Jerusalem.)

3. Who did Herod send for to help answer the Magi’s question? (The people’s chief priests and teachers of the law.)

4. According to these religious leaders where was the Messiah to be born? (In Bethlehem in Judea.)

5. Where were Herod and the religious leaders living? (Jerusalem.)

6. If Herod and the teachers of the law were in Jerusalem, why do you think they didn’t make the five mile trip to Bethlehem? (Maybe they did not believe in their heart that what the prophet said was true or they did not want to believe that Jesus was the Messiah.)

7. The teachers of the law had all sorts of scriptures memorized including the prophecy about Jesus. Do you think memorizing scripture gives us head knowledge or heart knowledge? (Answers will vary. If we just know verses in our memory but we never use them in our life or let them change they way we act they will never change our hearts.)

APPLICATION (4 minutes)

The Bible doesn’t tell us much about the religious teachers of the law in this passage but we know they knew all the prophecy in their head but it did not move them to action or cause celebration or worship. Maybe the religious leaders were worried that Herod would punish them if they celebrated Jesus’ birth. Perhaps the leaders did not believe Jesus was the true Messiah they had been waiting for. Maybe they just did not feel like they needed to make the short trip to see Jesus. But, whatever the reason, we see men that are supposed to be the leaders of the Jewish people that have spent their whole live studying scriptures but these scriptures are not fully known in their hearts. There is disconnect from what they know to be true and what emotions they feel in their hearts from that truth. We can study the Bible and go to Sunday school and church as much as we want but if we don’t let God’s Word and Bible stories change our hearts we are no different than the Pharisees and Teachers of the law. As Jesus grew up, these same teachers of the law spent their time quoting verses to Jesus and criticizing him instead of celebrating his miracles and rejoicing with the great things God was doing through him. We need to work hard to make sure the things we learn changes our hearts and we connect our heart knowledge with our head knowledge.

Discussion Question:1. How can we apply the things we learn from studying the Bible to our lives? (Answers will vary. Pray about the things we learn, asking God to help us change. Focus on one small way we can demonstrate something we have learned each week. Pray Bible verses.)

NEXT WEEK

We will continue in our series, the Characters of Christmas and see what we can learn from King Herod.
