SCRIPTURE READING AND DISCUSSION (15 minutes)
Read John 13:1-17 (Jesus washes His Disciples' feet)
Discussion Questions:
1. Why did people have their feet washed in Jesus' day? (They got dirty from walking on dusty roads.)
2. Who normally washed the feet of visitors? (Servants.)
3. Why did Jesus wash his Disciples' feet? (To show the greatest way to please God is by serving others.)
Read Matthew 26:17-30 (The Lord's Supper)
Discussion Questions:
1. What was the Passover that the people celebrated in Jesus' time? (When the angel of death passed over the homes of the Israelites after they painted their doorposts with the blood from a lamb.)
2. Why was Jesus referred to as the Lamb of God? (His blood was shed so we may be saved from eternal death.)
3. What represents the shedding of Jesus' blood in our communion services. (The cup of juice or wine.)
4. What does the broken bread represent in our communion services? (Jesus' body on the cross.)
5. So what is the meaning of communion? (It serves to remind Christians about the time Christ had His last supper with His Disciples and how He gave His life as a sacrifice for us.)
APPLICATION (10 minutes)
When John the Baptist first saw Jesus, he said, "Behold the Lamb of God". John knew Jesus would be the ultimate sacrifice by pouring out His blood so that we may be saved. Jesus came into this world to save us from eternal death. This was similar to the time when lambs were sacrificed during the Passover. The shedding of a lamb's blood saved the Israelites from the death of every firstborn. When Jesus met with his twelve Apostles to celebrate Passover, as it was done every year, He shared with them the true meaning of the lamb's sacrifice. Jesus knew that His time had come. He knew that His own body would be crucified, and His blood would be poured out for many, so everyone who believes in Him can be saved. Whenever we take communion, remember these things.
Discussion Question:
Look again at the list we created at the beginning of our class naming events we celebrate. How does the way we celebrate these events compare to the way people celebrated Passover during Jesus time? How are they different? (Allow for answers.)
NEXT WEEK
How do you normally show affection? By hugging, holding hands, kissing? Next week, we will learn how one of Jesus' Disciples used a kiss to mean death.
