MEMORY WORK (12 minutes)
"Follow God's example, therefore, as dearly loved children and walk in the way of love, just as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God." Ephesians 5:1-2 NIV
The children should be familiar with these verses now. For them to show their skills, form two or three teams. Explain that everyone in each team must say the memory verse and reference correctly and in unison. Each team can earn up to 100 points each time they do so. As each team recites the verse together, have someone listen carefully, and award up to the full 100 points depending on how well they do. If there is hesitation, deduct a few points, if not everyone is able to say it deduct some more, if they do not say it in perfect unison, deduct some more. Then give the next team a chance. Do this several times, totaling the points as you go. As the children learn the verse and perform better each time they will also earn more points. The team with the most points at the end of a predetermined number of rounds is the winner.
SCRIPTURE READING AND DISCUSSION (15 minutes)
Introduction:
Last week we talked about depending on God. In our Bible reading, Jesus compared us to something. Does anyone remember what it was? (We are the branches). The week before that, we talked about being humble and serving just like Jesus. Today, we are going to talk about love, because Jesus was loving. Before we start reading, what is love? (allow for answers)
Have a volunteer look up the word love in a dictionary. (Love is an intense affectionate concern for another person) Then look up the word love in a Bible Dictionary and compare the differences. (Love is the very nature of God and the greatest of Christian virtues)
Let’s see what the Bible says about love.
Read 1 John 4:7-12
Discussion Questions:
1. Where does love come from? (God.)
2. How did God show his love among us? (He sent his son into the world to be a sacrifice for our sins.)
3. Because God loves us, what should we also do? (Love one another.)
I want you to think of something you have that is very, very special to you. Maybe it’s an expensive toy, or a rare collectible. Do you have it in your mind? Now, would you be willing to give that special something to another person? Probably not to just anybody, right? However, that’s what God did. He gave us his Son, because He loves all of us so much. Likewise, Jesus showed His love for us. Most of us are familiar with John 3:16, but do you know what 1 John 3:16 says? Let’s read it.
Read 1 John 3:16
Discussion Questions:
1. How did Jesus show how much He loves us? (By laying down his life for us.)
2. What should we do to show how much we love other people? (Be willing to lay down our life for them.)
A familiar saying goes: “I asked Jesus how much he loved me. Then he stretched out his arms and said, ‘This much’, and died.” Now, let’s find out how to show Godly love.
Read 1 Corinthians 13:4-8a
Choose a volunteer to read these verses as the other children follow along in their Bibles.
CLASS EXERCISE (15 minutes)

ALTERNATE CLASS EXERCISE (10 minutes)
Loving Like Jesus (Skit) Click here
APPLICATION (2 minutes)
Knowing that God, the creator of the universe loves all of us is sure a great feeling. It’s amazing! God want’s us to love Him too. The Bible says that we can show our love for God by obeying the teachings of Jesus. (John 14:23). We also learned today that we should love each other. The Bible says, since God so loved us, we should love one another. (1 John 4:11) We will never be able to match the amount of love shown to us by God, but through His word, we can at least know how to start. That is by practicing Godly love, such as by being patient, kind, humble, generous, and trusting.
NEXT WEEK
What is the most important thing everyone has that they can give to God? Come back next week to find out.
