OPENING PRAYER AND PRAISE (5 minutes) Further info? Click here

MEMORY WORK (12 minutes) “I thank my God every time I remember you. 4In all my prayers for all of you, I always pray with joy.” Philippians 1:3-4 NIV

Print or type the verses in big letters across a piece of card stock paper. Then cut out each word and shuffle the words, face-up, on a table. Write the verses on the board and read them to the class. Then ask for volunteers to “race” one at a time and put the words in the correct order. Time each volunteer as he or she works on the verses. You may consider asking each volunteer to read the verses out loud as part of his or her time. Continue this activity as time allows or until each child has had a chance to practice memorizing the verses.

SCRIPTURE READING AND DISCUSSION (15 minutes) Introduction: This month we have learned that there are many ways to show thankfulness to God and others. Moses and Miriam sang songs of praise to show their thankfulness, while Hannah sacrificially gave her son over to God to serve in the temple. Today we will learn how and why Paul was thankful to God and his friends, the Philippians. And we will learn from his example that we can be thankful even when we face tough situations. Read Philippians 1:1-21 (Paul is thankful for the Philippians.) Discussion Questions: 1. How often does Paul thank God for the Philippians? (Every time he remembers them.) 2. How does he pray and why? (With joy because the Philippians partnered with him and became a committed part of his ministry.) 3. What does Paul share with the Philippians? (God’s grace.) 4. What does he pray? (That their love, discernment, and “fruit of righteousness” will grow.) 5. Where is Paul as he writes to the Philippians? (In prison.) 6. How are his chains affecting other believers? (They are motivated to preach even more!) 7. What is Paul’s response to the growth of the gospel even while he is in prison? (Rejoicing.) 8. What does Paul know will happen? (He will be delivered.) 9. What is “life” and “death” to Paul? (Living means serving Christ, and death means being with Him for all eternity.) 10. How does Paul show thankfulness to God and others? (Through prayers and letters.) Conclusion: Paul wrote a letter of thankfulness to the Philippians while he was in prison, and he showed thankfulness to God through prayer. Paul teaches us that we can always be thankful to God despite our circumstances because He is still in control! So, during times when we don’t feel like there’s anything to be thankful for, we can remember Paul’s example and trust that God will continue taking care of us too.

ALTERNATE CLASS EXERCISE (10 minutes) Thank You, Friend! (Game) Click here

APPLICATION (5 minutes) Read an article or short book excerpt about a missionary (or another individual) facing hard circumstances because of his or her faith. Help the children understand that God is very close to us when we face trials or when we’re mistreated because of our faith. This is how people who face hard circumstances, like Paul in the lesson and the person in the excerpt, can have peace and even be thankful to God despite what happens to them. And we should remember to pray for those who are persecuted for their faith and thank God for His protection and guidance.
