MEMORY WORK (12 minutes)
"Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God and obey it." Luke 11:28 NIV
Have the kids sit in a circle, and call out one child's name. That child will say the first word in the verse. The child to his or her left (clockwise) will say the second word in the verse, and the next child to the left the third word, the next the fourth word and so on until the verse and reference is complete. Use a timer to see how fast the verse can be recited. Repeat several times until everyone is familiar with the entire verse.
SCRIPTURE READING AND DISCUSSION (15 minutes)
Introduction:
If your mom or dad asked you to do something you really didn't want to do, how would you get out from doing it? What if you had a good excuse? How many times have you made an excuse for not doing something you knew you should do? Today's story is about a man who was asked by God to do something. However, the man didn't do it. He was supposed to warn his enemies of God's judgment. However, he believed that if he warned them, they would turn from their evil ways and God would withhold His punishment. The man didn't want that to happen. He would rather see them punished for their wickedness, so instead of obeying, the man ran away from God.
Read Jonah 1:1-17 (Jonah runs from the Lord)
Discussion Questions:
1. Instead of obeying God, what did Jonah do? (He ran and went aboard a ship sailing to Tarshish.)
2. How did the sailors find out the storm was because of Jonah? (They cast lots and then Jonah confessed.)
3. To save the ship from the storm, what did Jonah tell the sailors to do? (Throw him overboard.)
4. Do you think Jonah thought he would drown? Why didn't he? (God still wanted to use him: Jonah 3:1-2.)
5. What happened as soon as Jonah was thrown overboard? (The storm stopped.)
6. After being in the belly of a fish for three days, how do you think Jonah smelled? (Terrible.)
7. From these verses, when you are disobedient to God, who gets hurt? (You and others around you.)
8. What do you believe was Jonah's excuse for not obeying God? (See Jonah 4:1-4, selfish fear that God would have compassion on an enemy of Israel.)

APPLICATION (4 minutes)
What if every time you came up with a bad excuse to get out of doing something, a giant fish swallowed you? Bet you would never go near a large body of water. Fortunately for us, that probably won't happen if we disobey God, but God still doesn't want us to be disobedient. There will be a negative consequence. We may feel badly later on, we may hurt someone else, we may even miss out on something really nice the Lord had for us all along, but we will never be able to enjoy it. When we realize it is God telling us to do something, we must do it. This week, let's take God at His Word and receive His blessings, instead of being like a stinky Jonah.
NEXT WEEK
Is it okay to follow some of God's commands but not all? How about half of them? How about 9 out of 10? How about 99 out of 100? Come back next week to find out what happened to a king who thought he was obeying God, but didn't do everything he was told.
