GREATER THAN GOLD
The children will learn what genuine faith looks like and that it has great value. by Leah Pittsinger TOPICS: Faith, Restoration MATERIALS: Activity handout [PDF] Click here Scissors, tape Chocolate that looks like gold coins Bibles DURATION: Approximately 15 minutes PREPARATION: Print the handout and cut out the prompts. Then tape one prompt to each gold coin. Lastly, hide the coins throughout the classroom.
WHAT YOU WILL DO: Ask the children to search and find the gold coins. If desired, you may ask the children who find 1-2 coins to return to their chairs so every child can find a coin. Give the children Bibles and ask them to find the scripture reference on the coins they found. Then the children may unwrap the coins and eat the chocolate.
Application: Explain to the class that growing in faith means we will act differently than those who don’t believe in Jesus. Read 1 Peter 1:6-7 to help the class understand that becoming stronger in faith is something of great value: It’s “greater than gold!” Then go around the table and ask each child to read his or her prompts and verses. If desired, add your own input from life experiences. Encourage the children to remember that growing in faith doesn’t mean trying to be perfect. Rather, it means opening our hearts to God’s word and being willing to do the hard work of becoming more like Jesus.
