Ricky the Raccoon
A raccoon's prideful ego becomes his downfall. For storybook version Click here
TOPICS:

DURATION:
Approximately 5 minutes
Ricky the raccoon was a very wealthy raccoon. Many of the forest animals admired Ricky and his wealth. Ricky had worked hard to get where he was. When all the other forest animals were sleeping or playing he would be out rummaging through the farmer's trashcans. "One man's junk is another raccoon's treasure," he would say.
It was dangerous work. Ricky had many close calls with the farmer's old hound dog, Jake. You see, any time the farmer heard noises around his trash cans, he sent Jake out to chase away or kill the trash picking varmints. Animals of the forest often stopped by to see the wonderful things Ricky collected and to hear the exciting stories of how Ricky outsmarted the old hound dog.
As time went by, Ricky became more and more prideful. He started boasting that he was smarter than the farmer and quicker than the dog.
After a while, a rumor started that there was more than one raccoon going through the farmer's trash. This upset Ricky's ego. He wanted to be known as the most daring raccoon, the raccoon that no one could catch. He had to do something to show that he was the raccoon that had visited the farmer's trashcans late at night. So, he got an idea. When he was finished going through the trash, he would dump the trash cans over to prove he had been there.
Now, when the farmer saw his trash cans flipped over and trash all over the place, he became angry. The farmer had been going easy on the varmints, but now he had to get tough. He would set a trap.
The following evening, Ricky the raccoon came to the farmer's house to pick through the trash. Before he climbed into his first trash can, he noticed a treasure he had to have. It was the farmer's shiny wrist watch. Ricky scurried up to it. The watch was inside a box that had one small opening. The box was staked to the ground. Ricky could just barely squeeze his hand through the opening of the box.
He grabbed the watch and turned to leave, but he couldn't. For as long as he held on to the watch, he could not get his hand out of the box. Ricky heard the dog coming, but he really wanted that watch. What would the other animals think if he didn't get the shiny treasure? The dog was closer now. Ricky's greed and pride kept him from dropping the watch so he could escape. Before Ricky knew what hit him, the hound dog had him. Ricky the raccoon was no more.
Some people can be a lot like Ricky the raccoon. They have sins in their lives that they won't release. They know these sins can hurt them, they may even kill them, but they still won't let go of the sin. They worry more about what other people may think than they do about pleasing God.
Proverbs 16:18 - Pride goes before destruction, a haughty spirit before a fall.
