Pyramids of Egypt
Students will create a pyramid snack constructed from graham crackers and icing to remind them of God’s protection of Jesus in Egypt.by Lauren Shelnutt
TOPICS:Birth of Jesus, Christmas, Protection MATERIALS:5 square graham crackers per childVanilla frostingMetal serrated butter knifesPaper towels DURATION:Approximately 15 minutes |
WHAT YOU WILL SAY:
God provided a way to keep Jesus safe despite the power and influential leader that opposed him—King Herod. God had Mary and Joseph move to the land of Egypt to keep Jesus safe. One of the most notable landmarks in Egypt is the pyramids. Today, we are going to construct our own pyramids from graham crackers and icing today. Now, these may not be perfect but no matter what—they will be delicious and perhaps the next time you see a graham cracker you will be reminded of God’s provision in times of opposition.
WHAT YOU WILL DO:
1. Pass out serrated butter knives and paper towels for each child to have a workspace. Then, pass out 4 square graham crackers to each child to put on the paper.
2. Demonstrate for kids to use a sawing motion to cut the graham crackers in a triangular shape. Use the “perforated” lines of the crackers to make the shape as symmetrical as possible. Instruct kids to make 4 triangles this way. If any of the triangles break while being cut use icing to “glue” the pieces back together.
3. Pass out the remaining graham cracker square. Pass around the icing and allow children to use their knife to get some icing. Spread the icing in a square around the edges of the square cracker.
4. Have students stack the skinny base of each triangular piece and spread icing on edges of triangles to create “motor” to hold together the walls of the pyramid.5. Touch up the pyramid with icing as needed. If time allows, students can cover sides in icing and decorate with chocolate chips and sprinkles.
Timesaving Option:
Pre-cut graham crackers into triangles before class and allow students to focus on decorating the outside of the pyramids.
