MEMORY WORK (12 minutes)
“No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither the present or the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”Romans 8:37-39 NIV
Write the memory verse on the whiteboard. Read it out loud two times as a class. Starting with third recitation, have a child go up and erase 3 words from the board. Read verse as a class, remembering the missing words. Repeat this until all the words are gone. Have the students recite their memory verse completely from memory.
SCRIPTURE READING AND DISCUSSION (15 minutes)
Introduction:
It’s time for our Bible story for today. Today we are going to continue learning about another character involved in the Christmas story. This person is our first in this series that not only did not respond to the birth of Jesus in a good way but he also was furious with the thought of a new king coming to take away his power. Unfortunately, there are people during the Christmas season that will not be willing to celebrate Jesus and would rather us focus on other things. As we read from our Bible story found in Matthew chapter 2, lets pay close attention for how Herod reacted to the birth of Jesus and how God took those plans and made them work for good. Let’s listen to the story unfold.
Read Matthew 2:1-21 Discussion Questions:
1. What upset King Herod about the arrival of the Magi? (They claimed that a new star appeared in honor of the king of the Jews that was just born.)
2. What did Herod ask the Magi in secret? (When exactly the star appeared in the sky.)
3. Why do you think Herod would ask the Magi the exact time the star appeared? (Herod was trying to determine how old Jesus was based on when the start appeared in the sky.)
4. What reason did Herod give for wanting to know the exact location of Jesus? (Herod said he wanted to go and worship Jesus.)
5. Who warned Mary and Joseph in a dream about Herod’s real intentions for Jesus? (An angel of the Lord.)
6. What made the Magi decide to go home by another route and avoid King Herod? (They were warned in a dream not to go back to Herod.)
7. When Herod discovered that the Magi had outsmarted him what did he command be done? (He ordered that all baby boys in and near Bethlehem under the age of two be killed.)
8. After Herod died, how did Joseph know that it was safe to return to Israel? (An angel of the Lord appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt.)

APPLICATION (4 minutes)
King Herod did everything in his power to get rid of Jesus. He tried to trick others into revealing Jesus' location. Herod tried to get rid of all baby boys under the age of two—by killing them! Can you imagine how frightening it would be to live in a town where a King spent all his time trying to get rid of a baby? Did you know we live in a time where there are lots of people that don’t like to celebrate Christmas? People try to take “Christ” out of Christmas by calling it X-mas. People also want you to say “Happy Holidays” instead of saying Christmas. But, in life, there are people who will also go against things that you have learned in church or things that you have studied in the Bible. These people will try to tell you that you are wrong for believing the Bible. God tells us in our memory verse from Romans 8 that we will always be “more than conquerors” if we follow Jesus. God provided a way for Mary and Joseph to stay safe in the midst of a murderous King’s plot to kill Jesus. We can have faith that people who tell us to go against God’s Word will not win. We can have faith that God will work it together for our good and protect the people that He loves!
Discussion Question:
1. Has anyone ever teased you for believing in Jesus? (Answers will vary. Remember in your hearts if people try to tease or bother you for following Jesus God promises that no matter how hard things get—you are a conqueror and NOTHING can separate you from His love.)
NEXT WEEK
We will continue in our series, the Characters of Christmas and see what we can learn from the shepherds.
