CHRISTIAN LIVING
LESSON 3: BE A GOOD EXAMPLE
Children will discover how other people can see Jesus living in them, by being good examples of right Christian attitudes and behaviors.
TOPICS
Christian Living, Attitude, Character, Godliness, Morality, Serving, Witnessing
AS KIDS ARRIVE (10 minutes)
At home, cut out several short articles from local newspapers. Have at least 4 articles about a person who is setting a good example, and 4 more articles about someone who is setting a bad example. Before class have these articles spread out on the table, and as kids arrive have them read as many as they can. After everyone has arrived, or after the prayer time, make reference to each story, and with the kids' help place each story in one of two piles: good example or bad example.

MEMORY WORK (10 minutes)
"Don't let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith and in purity." 1 Timothy 4:12 NIV
Read the verse together several times, then write the verse on the board. Say the verse together as a class, erase a word or two and say the verse again. Continue in this manner until the words are all erased.
SCRIPTURE READING AND DISCUSSION (15 minutes)
Introduction:
We use examples all the time to help us understand things. The Bible is full of examples: Noah was an example of a righteous man, Abraham was an example of faith, David was an example of courage, and Judas was an example of a selfish betrayer.
We know it is better to be a good example than a bad example. But how can we be a good example of a Christian. Our Bible passage today is about a time when Jesus was with His disciples. He was going to teach them something very important. The way He chose to teach was by making Himself as an example. As we read this story, pretend you are one of the disciples listening and watching what is going on.
Have the children read the following passage from their Bibles.
John 13:1-17 (Jesus washes His disciples' feet)
Discussion Questions:
1. What meal were the disciples eating? (Evening meal sometime before the Passover feast)
2. Why did Jesus take off his outer garment? (To prepare to wash the disciples' feet)
3. Why did Peter say to Jesus, "Lord, you shall never wash my feet?" (He knew Jesus as Lord, not as a servant)
4. How is washing feet a humbling experience? (They are dirty, smelly; it’s the job of a lowly servant)
5. What did Jesus tell His disciples to do after washing their feet? (To wash each other's feet)
6. Jesus said He did this as an example. How can we be a good example to others? (By doing what is right and being there when someone needs help.)
7. In what other way does Jesus wash us?

APPLICATION (4 minutes)
What better example of being loving and caring could we possibly have other than Jesus Himself. The best way for people to see Jesus in us is to let them see Jesus through us. That means doing what Jesus would do. We don't practice the service of washing feet today as they did in Jesus' day. Perhaps we should.
But there are many things we can do to show the same caring and humble spirit as Jesus. Simple things, like saying thank you and really meaning it, doing our best without grumbling or trying to put it off until later, speaking the truth, and being there for someone who needs you. None of these things take any special training or skills, just doing what is right. Then when people learn you are a Christian, they will know that Jesus does make a difference in one's life. This week, be a good example so everyone will see Jesus alive through you.
NEXT WEEK
Next week we will have a very special guest visit our class. Be sure to be here.
