Book Fair

This object talk will teach children not to judge a book by its cover while relating it to how we judge each other.by Kristy Thornton

TOPICS:

Behavior, Discernment, Fairness, Judging, Reputation, Self-worth

MATERIALS:

Children’s Books

DURATION:

Approximately 10 minutes

PREPARATION:

Before class, obtain a number of children's books. The majority of the books should look neat and new, while two or three should be really beat up and worn on the outside. As an option, you can age a book by smearing dirt or writing on the cover and bending the pages. You can also put water on the pages and let them dry to make the book look worn.

WHAT YOU WILL DO:

Place all the books on the table. Make sure there are some books that look neat and new, while two or three appear extremely used, abused, and worn. You will call on the students one at a time to guess which book is your favorite. They must guess your favorite one only by looking at the outsides of the books. Then, you will pretend that the book appearing the most used, abused, or worn is your favorite.

WHAT YOU WILL SAY:

Today, we are having a book fair. I want you to guess which book is my favorite. (Call on one student at a time to pick out your favorite book. After each child chooses the book he or she thinks is your favorite, ask the following questions and allow for discussion.)

1. Why did you think that was my favorite book?

2. What made you pick that book?

3. Do you like the way this book looks on the outside?

(After everyone has had a chance to choose a book and answer the questions, reveal which book is your favorite.)

My favorite book is actually this one. (Hold up a book that is used and worn.)

Do you know why this book is my favorite? (Allow for answers.)

Because the story inside is amazing. If we have time at the end of class, I might read a bit of it to you. The majority of you would not have guessed that this is my favorite book because it is so worn.

You cannot judge a book by its cover. You have to open it up and read what is on the inside to see how good it really is. The same thing applies to people. We have to get to know someone to determine what they are really like, not just look at their outer appearance.

John 7:24 says, "Do not judge by appearances, but judge with right judgment."

Discussion Questions:

1. Can people determine who you are from just looking at your outward appearance? (No, you might have worn clothes or muddy shoes, but you are a great student.)

2. How often do you judge someone by the way he or she looks? (Allow for discussion.)

3. If we should not judge a book by its cover, do you think we should judge others by their appearance? (No, we need to get to know people.)
