TEACHINGS FROM JESUS

LESSON 1: Who is the Greatest?

In this lesson, children learn that sometimes to be first is to be last. While other times, being last means being first. People who humble themselves and help serve others are considered first in God's eyes.by Kristy Thornton

BIBLE VERSE (7 minutes)

"Anyone who wants to be first must be the very last, and the servant of all." Mark 9:35b NIV

To become familiar with this verse, have the children repeat it aloud several times together. Then, get them to sit in a circle. Give one student a rolled up sock or beanbag, and have him or her say the first word of the verse. Then, this person must pass the sock or beanbag to the next person on his or her right, and that child says the second word of the verse. He or she then passes the sock or beanbag again to the next child who says the third word, and so on. Provide help as needed. Continue in this manner until someone says the last word of the verse. Have everyone give this person a cheer for being the servant of all. Then, do it again with someone else as the starting person. Repeat several times to give several students the opportunity to receive a cheer.

BIBLE STORY (15 minutes)

Gather the children around you in preparation for story time. After the introduction, read the story right from the Bible. If possible, use a Children's Bible so it will be easier for the kids to understand.

Introduction:Today, we are going to read a short story from the Bible. Some of Jesus' disciples were arguing over who was the greatest. Have you ever argued with a brother or sister, or a friend who was better than you were at something? Maybe they can run faster, or get a better score at a video game. Well, in our story, these grown men were arguing just as you might. Jesus couldn't take their arguing anymore, so He asked them what they were arguing about. Let’s read our story to find out what Jesus told them.

Read Mark 9:33-37 (Who is the Greatest?)

Discussion Questions:

1. What were the disciples arguing about on the road? (Who was the greatest?)

2. Did they actually tell Jesus about what they were arguing? (Not, they kept quiet.)

3. After calling together the twelve disciples, what did Jesus tell them about greatness? (Anyone who wants to be first must be the very last, and the servant of all.")

4. How does this statement explain who is the greatest? (The greatest person in not just who is the fastest, quickest, or cleverest. The greatest is the person who takes time to help and serve others.)

5. If you welcome a child in the name of Jesus, whom else do you welcome? (Jesus.)

6. The scripture says, "Whoever welcomes me doesn't welcome me, but the one who sent me." Who is the one who sent Jesus? (God, our Father in Heaven.)

7. Why do you think Jesus chose a little child to show what He was saying about who is the greatest? (Allow for answers.)

PRAYER/SNACK (10 minutes)

Further info? Click here

Start by praying to God and thanking Him for sending Jesus. Pray that God will teach us how to serve others for His glory. Ask volunteers to help you pass out the snacks and serve the class. The more items there are to serve the better. For example, napkins, utensils, cups of water, etc. Explain to the volunteers that they might not be the first to eat their snacks and in fact may be last. However, they can be happy knowing that they were servants to all.
