"Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go." Joshua 1:9 NIV

Write the entire verse on the board and have the children read it together. Then begin by erasing some of the words, for example the word "the" or all words with only three letters etc. Then have the children read the verse again with the missing words. Then erase a few more words and have them read it again. Continue until all the words are erased and the children are reciting the entire verse from memory.

SCRIPTURE READING AND DISCUSSION (15 minutes)

Introduction:

Today, we are introduced to a man named Joshua. The Lord selected Joshua to be the next leader of Israel after the death of Moses. After wandering in the desert for 40 years the people were finally getting a second chance to enter the land God had promised Moses. The people wanted a strong leader. God gave Joshua the task of leading the Israelites into this new land. There would be many obstacles in the way which would test Joshua's leadership abilities.

Read Joshua 1:1-18 (The Lord Commands Joshua)

Discussion Questions:

1. Who did God select as the next leader after Moses died? (Joshua)

2. Where did God tell Joshua to lead the Israelite people? (Into the land God promised to Moses.)

3. Would all of the Israelites live in the promised land? (No, the Reubenites, the Gadites and the half-tribe of Manasseh were allowed to live in the land Moses gave them east of the Jordan river.)

4. What did God promise Joshua? (God promised that He would never leave Joshua or forsake him.)

5. What did God expect of Joshua? (That Joshua would be strong, courageous and carefully obey all the laws God had given to Moses.)

6. Did the Israelite people accept Joshua as the new leader? (The people told Joshua that they would fully obey him, just as they had obeyed Moses.)

7. What type of leader did the Israelites want? (The people wanted a leader who was strong and courageous.)

8. What would happen to those who rebelled against Joshua? (They would be put to death.)

APPLICATION (2 minutes)

In today's lesson, we learned that God wants us to meditate on His Word day and night. We need to be careful to guard our hearts and not depart from what is taught in the Bible. We can take great comfort in knowing that God will never leave or forsake those that He loves. Today's lesson also taught us that we can courageously do the tasks God gives us, no matter the obstacles that may appear to be in the way.

NEXT WEEK
