MEMORY WORK (12 minutes)
"For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do." Ephesians 2:10 NIV
Write the verse on the board and recite it aloud as a class. Recite the verse after each question below.
1. Whose handiwork are we? (God's.)
2. For what, were we created? (To do good works.)
3. With whose help can we accomplish these tasks? (God has prepared our work for us in advance.)
SCRIPTURE READING AND DISCUSSION (15 minutes)
Introduction:
Today’s lesson will show us that Jesus’ heart is for the wounded. Jesus explains in simple terms that just because someone is disabled doesn’t mean it is a result of sin. Jesus gives a good reason why people might be born disabled in our story today. Let’s read and find out more.
Read John 9:1-12 (Jesus Heals the Blind)Discussion Questions:
1. Was the blind man always blind? (Yes, since birth.)
2. How did the disciples judge the blind man? (They thought he was blind due to his or his parents' sins.)
3. How did Jesus respond to the disciples' judgmental question? (The man was born blind so that the works of God might be displayed in him.)
4. How did Jesus heal the blind man? (Jesus healed the man by anointing the man’s eyes with mud. Jesus then told him to wash in the pool of Siloam.)
5. Do you think it still took faith for this man to be healed? (Allow for responses.)
6. What do you think would have happened if the man didn’t allow Jesus to put mud on his eyes because it was too weird or if the man did not obey Jesus and wash off the mud? (Allow children to respond. The man might not have been healed.)
7. Why do you think the neighbors didn’t recognize the beggar? (Because they were accustomed to seeing him beg as a blind man.)
8. How did Jesus and the blind man display the works of God and bring glory to the Father? (Jesus performed a miracle, demonstrating God’s healing power. The blind man gave God glory by telling others what the Lord had done for him.)

APPLICATION (2 minutes)
In today's lesson, we have learned that hard times or unfortunate things might happen to us or people we love, but to remember that hardship is not necessarily a consequence of sin. Sometimes, unfortunate things happen to others or us to display the works of God. When this happens, it glorifies God.
