MEMORY WORK (12 minutes)

"The blind receive sight, the lame walk, those who have leprosy are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised and the good news is proclaimed to the poor." Matthew 11:5 NIV

Write the verse on the board and read it out loud with the class. Then show the children how to act out the verse while reciting it:

“The blind receive sight” – Make binoculars with your hands and hold them up to your eyes.

“the lame walk” – Walk in place.

“those who have leprosy are cleansed” – Pretend to wash your hands.

“the deaf hear” – Cup your hands around your ears.

“the dead are raised” – Crouch down and then jump up.

“and the good news is proclaimed to the poor.” – Cup your hands around your mouth.

Demonstrate acting out of the verse at least two times. Then invite the children to participate with you, either by reciting the verse, acting out the motions, or doing both. Repeat as many times as desired.

SCRIPTURE READING AND DISCUSSION (15 minutes)

Introduction:

While the word “pool” refers to a place for having fun in the summer, it had a slightly different meaning and use during Jesus’ day. Pools were gathering places for people who had various illnesses or injuries because their ailments could often be helped or cured by entering a pool. In today’s lesson, Jesus performs a miracle in Jerusalem at a special pool called Bethesda.

Read John 5:1-15 (Jesus heals a disabled man.)

Discussion Questions:

1. Why were disabled people at the pool? (Because every day one person could enter the pool and be healed.)

2. How long had the man Jesus met been disabled? (Thirty-eight years.)

3. Why hadn’t the man been healed? (Because someone always beat him to the pool.)

4. What did Jesus tell the man? (To get up, pick up his mat, and walk.)

5. Did the man have to enter the pool? (No.)

6. What does this event teach us about Jesus’ power? (That His actions didn’t require the help of the healing pool and His words were powerful enough to heal the man.)

7. Why was it a big deal to the Jewish leaders that Jesus had healed the man on the Sabbath? (Because it was against their human law to move something on the Sabbath.)

8. What important part of this event did the Jewish leaders completely miss? (That the disabled man had been healed!)

9. What did Jesus tell the healed man at the temple? (To stop sinning.)10. What did the healed man tell the Jewish leaders? (That Jesus had healed him.)

Conclusion:

A man who had been disabled for thirty-eight years was healed by Jesus! This event teaches us that the Lord cares for us and has the power to perform miracles. The Jewish leaders were too focused on other things and missed out on what Jesus had done. So, we should be like the healed man and tell others about Jesus’ healing power!

APPLICATION (2 minutes)

Draw a large circle on a white board (or poster board) and title it, “Jesus’ Power.” Tell the children about a time when you experienced physical healing from the Lord and what it taught you about His power. Write one or two words in the circle that have to do with your circumstance, such as “injury” or “sickness.” Then ask for volunteers to discuss times they have witnessed the healing power of God (such as the healing of a family member or friend). Add more words to the circle for each example. To conclude the activity, talk about Jesus’ power over all the listed words as evidenced through your combined experiences. Encourage the children to remember the times of healing in the past so they can trust God with any future needs for healing.
