OPENING PRAYER (5 to 10 minutes)

GROUP BUILDING (5 minutes)

(There’s so much material here, we’re going to jump right into the Bible Study without much of a “hook.” For that reason, there are a couple of optional activities later in the lesson.)

GETTING STARTED (10 minutes)

Today we’re going to look at the next chunk of Colossians. There’s a lot of material, and we’re going to plow through it with a lot of discussion. But I really want you to think about our connection with Jesus as we talk tonight. How are we connected to Christ? What causes and qualifies us for that connection?

Remember that last week we established that Christ is God in the flesh. That means that as we talk tonight about our connection with Christ, we are talking about a connection with the Creator of the universe, the One who holds all things together. It should be good, so let’s get into it.

DIGGING IN (30 minutes)

In this text we have Paul telling the Colossians something that should not go overlooked: the mystery of the Gospel—Jesus Christ has been revealed to the saints.

Read Colossians 1:24-28

Discussion Questions

1. Verse 26 says that that mystery had been kept a secret for “ages and generations" (NIV). What does that mean? (No one knew when the Messiah would come into the world, but Paul was finally allowed to proclaim the good news)

2. Who do you think the “saints” are in verse 26? (Those who know Jesus as Lord and Savior)

(*If necessary, you may wish to go into the Jew/Gentile difference here. I would not become preoccupied with it, but it is noteworthy that Paul mentions Gentiles as a group that are receiving the Gospel for the first time)

3. Who does Paul tell about this great mystery, according to verse 28? (notice “everyone” is used twice)

A connection to Christ, according to this passage, is available to everyone. The mystery of the Gospel is no longer a secret, it is the Good News for all to hear! It’s like the ah-ha moment in a mystery movie where the whole thing is solved. We don’t have to wonder about Jesus anymore!Let’s pick up where we left off in verse 29 and read through 2:5.

Read Colossians 1:29-2:5

Paul takes this connection with Christ idea one step further. After establishing that it is available, he gets personal.

Discussion Questions

1. How many times does Paul say “I” or “my” or another first-person pronoun in these verses? (There are 8 in the NIV)

2. What is Paul’s role in making the gospel known? (He shared the good news about Jesus with others)

3. Is it easy for him? What are some of his struggles? (No, he endured prison, beatings, and shipwrecks)

4. To what degree to you find it hard to share the gospel? What are some of your obstacles?

(Students have a place in their workbooks to record these by the hurdle graphic)

Okay, so connections with Christ are not automatic. They take sacrifice from someone. For the Colossians, it was people like Paul, Timothy, and others, that made their connection with Christ possible.

*Epaphrus, the founder of the church in Colossae, is another figure who sacrificed much in order to connect people to Jesus. If you have a chance, a quick study of him in the Scriptures might be appropriate (see Col. 1:7, Acts 19:10, and Philemon 23).

Optional Activity (10 minutes)

Life's Hurdles (Activity) Click here

Read Colossains 2:6-15

Discussion Questions

1. That was a mouthful. Someone summarize, in your own words, Paul’s point.

2. Verse 6 says we should “continue to live” for Christ. What does that mean to you?

The example Paul gives is that of a plant “rooted and built up” in him. Draw out that analogy more.

3. What does the Christian life and plants have in common?(Not every student will get that analogy, but encourage it to develop. What is our root system? What does it take to grow? What happens as we grow? Etc.)

In verse 9, Paul re-asserts Christ’s deity again. That theme remains the basis for everything he is saying.

4. What is the “written code” mentioned in verse 14? What happened to it?

5. How do Christ's actions (verses 13-15) influence our ability to “continue to live in Him”?

There’s one more section to look at, and in some ways, it’s the bread and butter of this text. It’s a little more complicated, too, so try to listen up.

Read Colossians 2:16-23

There are a lot of laws and warnings in this passage. In the early church, Christians would be confused by false teachers who went around trying to add stuff to the Gospel. While Paul says it is through faith in Christ alone that we can be saved, these heretics taught that it was faith plus certain things.

Discussions

1. Can you see any false teachings in this passage? (There’s a spot in the student's workbook for listing these, in the “faith plus” box)

*Again, if you have time, it might be worth contemplating some of these false teachings. What is a New Moon celebration? What did they eat or drink that they were judged by? What’s so bad about a Sabbath day? Why is false teaching like this damaging to the Body?

2. Whether it’s a New Moon festival or the worship of angels, how do the things Paul lists affect our salvation? (They can't affect our salvation)

3. According to verse 22, what will happen to these things? (They will perish) Why will such things perish? (Because they are based on human teachings)

4. Why do you think these things lack value in the Christian life, like Paul says in verse 23? (They lack value because they are based on false teaching)

5. Are there similar teachings out there today? (Yes) How can we distinguish between heresy and truth? (Ensure that the teaching aligns with the word of God)

MAKING IT REAL (10 minutes)

In your workbook, write these 4 things:A connection to Christ is:

1. Available to all

2. Not automatic

3. Continual

4. Through Christ alone

We’ve talked a lot tonight about having a connection to Christ. Keep in mind, what that really means is that we are connected to the God of all things.

Discussion Questions

1. How does that make you feel?

2. What do you think you should do about it?

As you go through this week, I encourage you to plan to share with someone the truth of Jesus and how you have come to know Him. Because next week, we’re going to talk about how we should relate to the world.
