BIBLE STORY (15 minutes)

Introduction:

Does anyone know what “prayer” means (talking to God)? Did you know that Jesus told His disciples, or friends, that there is a right way to pray? Today we will start our lessons on the Lord’s Prayer, an example prayer that Jesus used to teach others how to pray so we can learn what’s important to God when we talk to Him.

Read Luke 11:1-4, Matthew 6:9-15 (Jesus teaches us to pray.)

Discussion Questions:

1. What does Jesus talk about in His prayer? (God’s holiness/perfect nature, asks for God’s kingdom to come and will be done, asks for food/daily needs, asks for forgiveness, asks for help with temptation so he won’t sin/do bad things.)

2. What are some things we need every day? (Food, clothing, shelter, etc.)

3. When should we ask God for help? (When we want to choose the right thing, are struggling, or don’t know what to do.)

4. Is this prayer long or short? (Short.)

5. What does this teach us about our prayers? (That we don’t have to pray long prayers for God to listen!)

6. What is forgiveness? (God loving us and giving us another chance when we sin/do bad things.)

7. Why should we also forgive others? (Because God forgives us!)

8. Which of the things that Jesus prayed for is the hardest for you? (Open ended question: Answers will be different for every child.)

Conclusion:

Anyone can talk to God through prayer. Jesus gave us the example of recognizing God’s perfection, asking Him to provide for our needs, and seeking forgiveness when we pray. And as we learn to pray, we will learn more about God and His love!
