BIBLE STORY (15 minutes)

Introduction:

We have learned over the past several weeks that it’s important to be respectful to God when we pray and that we can believe He will answer us. In this last lesson on the Lord’s Prayer (Jesus’ example prayer for His disciples), we will learn why it’s good to ask God for the things we need and want.

Read Luke 11:1-10 (We should ask God for what we need.)

Discussion Questions:

1. How does Jesus teach the disciples to make prayer requests to God? (He tells a story about a friend in need.)

2. What does the friend need? (Food.)

3. What answer does he receive? Why? (Yes! Because he asked for the food.)

4. What are three things Jesus encourages us to do through prayer? (Ask, seek, knock.)

5. What does this teach us about prayer? (To ask God for what we need because he is listening and ready to provide.)

6. What are some other things we can ask for when we pray? (For sick friends to be healed, for others to know Jesus, for help with something that is hard, etc.)

7. Does God also care about what we want? (Yes.) How do we know? (Because He loves us!)

8. Does this mean we will always get what we pray for? (No, because sometimes God has a different, better plan for us than what we would like to happen.)

Conclusion: Sometimes we forget to ask God for the things that we need, but we can always turn to Him through prayer. And we don’t have to be afraid to ask God for the things we would like either because He will still answer us! The important thing to remember is that God loves us and wants us to make requests because it shows Him that we know He can provide. So, when we pray, we can make requests and know that God will answer our prayers.

Lead the children in a short prayer and then pass out a healthy snack. While eating, talk about things the children ask to receive from their parents, such as toys, snacks, prizes, etc. Ask the class to consider why parents sometimes say “no” to requests. Encourage the children by admitting that sometimes God says “no” to our prayer requests too, but that’s because He knows what it truly best for us. However, we should never be afraid to ask God for what we need because sometimes the answer is “yes!
