BIBLE VERSE (7 minutes)
"But our citizenship is in heaven." Philippians 3:20
Read the Bible verse aloud to the class. Discuss and talk about the word citizenship. The scripture tells us where our real true home is. All believers in Christ have a permanent home in Heaven that is eternal. The home you are living in right now is not your eternal home. Homes on earth can be taken away, burned down, or rebuilt. Families sometimes outgrow their homes or sell them, and a new owner comes to live in it. There is only one home that can’t be taken away from you, and you can’t outgrow it as you get a bigger family, nor can this home have a new owner. Our true forever home is in Heaven. We are just visiting here on earth and know that one day believers will spend eternity in our forever home together. Repeat the memory verse one more time as a class.
BIBLE STORY (15 minutes)
Introduction:
Today we are going to read Chapter 3 in the book of Philippians as Paul continues to write to the Philippians while he is in prison. In his letters, he encourages the Philippians and all Christians to keep on spreading the word about Jesus. Let’s read part of his letter to see how he encourages the Philippians.
Read Philippians 3:12-14, 20-21
Discussion Questions:
1. Who wrote the letter? (Paul.)
2. Who did he write the letter to? (Christians, Philippians, and all believers everywhere.)
3. Was Paul perfect? (No, he said that he wasn’t perfect but that he would continue to grab a hold of Christ and all that is available to him in Christ. We need to take a hold of Christ and live for Him.)
4. Paul states that he is forgetting what is behind and straining for what is ahead. Have your parents ever told you to forget about something? (Allow children to respond. Sometimes it is good for us to let go and let God be God. We need stop worrying about what happened in the past but focus on what is next—the future.)
5. In verse 14, Paul talks about a prize. What do you think the prize is? Do you think we all get a piece of that prize? (Yes, the prize is eternity with Jesus in Heaven.)
6. Where is your true forever home? (Our citizenship is in Heaven.)
