Filthy Rags

Can we, being like filthy rags, ever become completely clean? With Jesus we can!

TOPICS:

Born Again, Forgiveness, Salvation, Sacrifice, Sin

MATERIALS:

Very dirty ragClean ragPaper bag or bucket

DURATION:

Approximately 7 minutes

WHAT YOU WILL DO:

Place a very dirty rag, and a clean rag into a plain brown bag or bucket before class. You will compare a very dirty rag to a person who has not received Christ and is still dirty with sin, and a clean rag to a person who has received salvation and the forgiveness of sin through the sacrifice of Jesus.

WHAT YOU WILL SAY:

God’s love for us is very great, wouldn’t you agree? In the Bible, in Sunday school class, and in church we learn that God loves us very much. In fact, so much that he sent His only Son to the cross to die for our sins. But, why did Jesus have to die for my sins? After all, I’m a good person, I try not to lie, or cheat, or steal. I’m going to heaven. Right? (Allow of answers.)

Well, the correct answer is NO! I am not going to heaven just because I try to do what is good or right. In Romans 3:23, Paul says, “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” That means no one can get to heaven by their own efforts. The Bible also says that all of the good things we do on our own are like filthy rags to God (Isaiah 64:6). Can you image a filthy rag? Well, you don’t have to. I just happen to have one here. (Pull out dirty rag.)

Yuck! This is filthy. How would you like to take a bath with this, or dry the dishes? I could try to clean it first, with soap and water, maybe some bleach, and by pounding it on a rock. But, it will never be like it was when it was new. (Put the dirty rag back in the bag.)

So if we are like that filthy rag, then where is our hope? Our hope is in Jesus! That is why he sacrificed His own life to save ours! He was tortured, flogged, whipped and mocked, and then nailed to a cross to die a painful death, all because He loves us so much. That’s what Jesus did so we can be like new. However, we need to do something too. Do you know what Jesus asks us to do? (Allow for answers.)

In John 6:47, Jesus said, “I tell you the truth, he who believes has everlasting life.”He asks us to believe in him. That’s all. His love and sacrifice covers over a multitude of sins (1 Peter 4:8). When we let Jesus be the Lord of our life, we are filthy no more. (Pull out clean rag.)
