MEMORY WORK (12 minutes)

"We wait in hope for the LORD; he is our help and our shield." Psalm 33:20 NIV

Write the verse on the board and recite it several times. Go around the room and ask the children what was the longest amount of time they had to wait for something? Was it worth the wait? How long would they be willing to wait on the Lord? Share your experiences as well. Recite the verse again and ask the kids to take it to heart, we can and should place our hope in the Lord; He is our help and protection.

SCRIPTURE READING AND DISCUSSION (15 minutes)

Introduction:

The nation of Israel cried out for an earthly king because they wouldn’t accept Samuel’s dishonest sons Joel and Abijah who had been appointed as judges over the people.

God’s people justified their decision by saying that they couldn’t see a logical replacement for Samuel, as his sons were known for accepting bribes and perverting justice. (Which we can see is forbidden in Deuteronomy 16:19.) The people would not wait for God to provide a leader and demanded that a king be appointed over them.

God told Samuel to warn the people about the consequences of having an earthly king rule over them. An earthly king would demand the best they had—their sons, daughters, fields, and vineyards. A king would take a tenth of their wealth and distribute it to his officials. A king would take the best of their servants, cattle, and livestock. God freely gives, but an earthly king freely takes. The word "take" is used six times in the short passages of 1 Samuel 8:11-17. The people would in fact become slaves to a king. God warned them that a day would come when they would cry out for relief from their earthly monarchy, but He would not listen to them on that day.

The people refused to listen to Samuel’s counsel and demanded a king be placed over them so that they could be like the other nations. (1 Samuel 8:20) Here we see the true motivation behind their reason for wanting a king; they wanted to be like the other nations. They were unspiritual (carnal) believers, having a religious manner but wanted to be like those around them.

The people rejected God, His authority, protection, and provision for that of an earthly king. This was not news to God, as the people had been grumbling and walking in the flesh since they had been brought out of Egypt. The people would have preferred to remain slaves for what they interrupted to be a more comfortable life. Is this true of us today? Are we slaves to comfort and entertainment?

Read 1 Samuel 8:1-21

Discussion Questions:

1. As Samuel grew older whom did he appoint as judges over Israel? (His sons, Joel and Abijah.)

2. What type of judges were Joel and Abijah? (Dishonest - they accepted bribes and perverted justice.)

3. What solution did the Israelites come up with for this problem? (They wanted an earthly king to be appointed over them.)

4. God told Samuel to warn the people of the consequences of having an earthly king. What were some of these consequences? (A king would take much more than he would give. The people would be enslaved to the king and the sons that followed in his place.)

5. The people refused to listen to Samuel and demanded that a king be placed over them. What was their true motive? (1 Samuel 8:20 - They wanted to be like the other nations.)

6. Are we in danger of removing God from our government today? Is there any reason to think that removing God from all forms of our government will have any better consequences than it did for the Israelites?
